Students from Strathalbyn helping the community of Carnarvon

Students from Strathalbyn Christian College Geraldton are helping children and the community of Carnarvon this week.

A group of 28 Year 10 students and 10 adults arrived in Carnarvon on Saturday 19 July and will stay until Saturday 26 July. The students will provide daily literacy support for students at Carnarvon Christian School They have been developing these same skills on a weekly basis mentoring primary classes at Strathalbyn Christian College.

Strathalbyn Christian College Principal, Mr Paul Arundell said the annual Year 10 ‘mission trip’ is an important part of the students’ learning because it helped them to focus on other people rather than themselves.

“The College has a strong commitment to diverting students from developing a sense of entitlement. Instead, we encourage them to use the talents and resources they have to bless and help others,” Mr Arundell said.

Since arriving in Carnarvon, the team has participated through music and drama at worship services at the Church of Christ and Anglican churches. Teacher and camp coordinator, Mr Lindsay Graieg said students will take part in a range of activities including drama, music, science and sport that has been carefully planned and practiced over the past two school terms.

“The big idea is that this group of staff and students are going to bless and be enriched by serving a local school community,” Mr Graieg said.

“The students will not only share learning skills, but they will model the values and attitudes that reflect a Biblical life and Worldview.”

“We know the students will gain valuable insights into the community and lives of its members. We know that we will all be enriched as much as we do things to enrich others,” Mr Graieg said.

A family concert has been planned at Carnarvon Christian School and the Geraldton students will perform music and dramas at Carnarvon Community College. Community service work has been planned at The Blowholes and in the wider community through the Carnarvon Shire and the Country Health services.

During the week, students will also visit the Carnarvon Research Station, Chinaman’s Pool and the Historical Precinct and play a football and touch rugby with the Carnarvon Clontarf Academy.

Carnarvon Christian School has been a part of the Carnarvon community since 1995 and has expanded quickly to 139 students. The school has the same values and similar goals as Strathalbyn Christian College and it is hoped that their relationship will be strengthened through mutual respect and encouragement.

For photo opportunities in Carnarvon this week, please contact Mr Lindsay Graieg on 0478 624 470.

Windy, big swells & cold across the board!! Some weeks the fish report is difficult….and this is one of them. With a weeks worth of large swells and strong winds there has not been a lot of fishing stories. Apparently 6 metre swells tend to put people off! Our fishing guru, Craig Wise, did the smart thing. He has headed to Exmouth for some better fishing. This is what our fisherman takes with him! Craig came to Tackleworld through his love (and lets say obsessive nature) about fishing. His dream was to join the team and talk fishing all day, his sunny disposition made him a natural addition to our team. He really is a lot of fun to work with!!

Fishing1

Craig was out hunting mulloway last weekend down off the jetty and even he found it difficult. He took these photos of his catch even with 30knot winds and just 7 degrees. He was working with some watermelon 6’ gulp and caught this nice little soapie.

AFTA – Australian Fishing Tackle Association conference at Gold Coast 2014

John has come back full of enthusiasm about the products on offer from Daiwa, Shimano, Halco, Rapala and many more. Look in store for new stocks coming in over the following month

Fishing for the future with local fishing clinics

photo-3 Tackleworld Geraldton in conjunction with Recfishwest have presented fishing clinics over the last 3 days with over 100 local kids getting involved.

The clinics involved education across a number of fishing aspects and was held at the Geraldton Marina.

Alan from Recfishwest said the education was about fishing for the future as well as teaching youth the proper way to fish.

“These clinics are to teach kids about the basics of fishing and about having fun as well,” he said.

“We reiterate that safety is number one and teach them how to fish for the future.”

The amateur anglers were taught everything from rules and regulations, catching and releasing, handling fish, how to be sun smart, pollution and they loved getting onto the jetty and catching some fish.

Wendy from Tackleworld Geraldton praised Recfishwest and said the clinics would be back.

“I am really impressed with the format of these clinics and the kids have absolutely loved it.”

LOCAL ROCKWALLS Reports of Tailor to 30cm and mulloway to 15kg being caught from behind the Fishermen's Wharf rock walls.

TW Gero crew have been flicking soft plastics along the harbour walls recently and have been finding lots of small hard fighting fish readily hitting the plastics.

Guys fishing the northern rock walls have told us of good catches of school sharks after dark.

NEW MARINA & FISHERMEN'S WHARF

We have heard more reports of Cod to 40 cm being caught from inside both the local harbours.

Small Tailor are plentiful along the ocean walls with small metal and hard body lures working well.

We also were told of a nice little Golden Trevally that was caught by a young lad fishing squid baits off the jetty in the new marina.

There was another Golden Trevally caught from the jetty by our good mate Craig a few weeks back. (pictured below)

Other anglers fishing mulies off the new marina jetty are telling stories of continually hooking up to solid fish and getting busted off.

GREENOUGH -

Bream to 38cm have been caught on prawn baits up near the mouth.

Mangrove Jacks are becoming a regular capture for anglers fishing around the rock bars and tight snags further up river.

We have seen photos of Jacks being caught that are well over 40cm the past couple weeks.

Devlin's pool has produced Bream to 30cm, fishing after dark has been extremely quiet with bites near on nonexistent after the sun goes down.

Anglers are still reminded that the Greenough River is a very unhealthy healthy system and most fish species are carrying red spot disease at this time. It is not advisable to eat any fish out of there until further notice.

PRODUCT PLUG -

Sea Ride Blue Blue -

Blue Blue fishing brand from Tokyo have designed a very unique jig that is designed for the casting and jigging game.

These jigs come pre-rigged with top quality micro flashing assists attached via a split ring to the head of the jig. Normally with most casting jigs the weight is located at the rear however with SeaRide the majority of the weight is located at the head aiding to create the erratic actions it displays. The finish is also top notch with a variety of colors to choose from.

Another brilliant feature about these lures is that they be cast out and fast retrieve back, which creates an erratic side-to-side action, which is irresistible to the apex predators. So therefore, this lure is two lures in one with the slow jigging as well as the fast burn retrieve.

Blue Blues Sea Ride are not just limited to casting but can also be used for vertical jigging with extremely effective results on species such as Skippy, Snapper, Cod, Dhu Fish, Sampson Fish, Mackerel, Tuna, Coral Trout etc, Sea Ride Blue Blues have proven very popular with offshore jig fisherman.

Sea Ride jigs are designed with the latest in slow jigging technology with its amazing slide action, these jigs glide erratically through the water column like a soft plastic. These jigs are perfect for inshore and deep sea fishing and are used best when there is little or no run. The Sea Ride have a very unique "dolphin action" like no other lure in the world. When you slightly twitch upwards and retrieve, this creates the unique "dolphin" swimming action which is irresistible to many fish.

If you are into jigging in any way, then these are a must have for your jigging wallet.
