Send off parade for the Buccs

The City has announced a massive send-off parade for the Suncity Plumping Geraldton Buccaneers by the Mayor to take place this Thursday at 5pm in the CBD.

The parade will involve all of the Buccaneers players, prior to making their way to Perth to play in the SBL Grand Finals.

Organisers want as many Buccaneers supporters as possible to line the streets on Marine Terrace.

City CEO, Ken Diehm, said the City will decorate the street in blue and yellow and work with businesses to make their shop fronts look amazing.

“We want a massive send off for our boys as they represent Geraldton in the Grand Finals. We want it to be a huge send-off,” he said.

“The Buccs will slowly drive down Marine Terrace from Freemasons to the Basketball Court on the Foreshore.”

Buccaneers General Manager, Andrew Horstman, said having this amount of community spirit has helped us win the last two games.

“It has been phenomenal, we never thought this much support would have such a positive effect,” he said.

“The whole campaign has been game changing and we encourage everyone to come to Marine Terrace this Thursday at 5pm to cheer the team on”

The streets will be covered in blue and yellow, Buccs Cheerleaders chanting and an official send-off from the Mayor will be part of the occasion.

Spirit FM will be doing a live broadcast from the basketball courts with pumping music.

The Mayor will present the Best Individual Buccaneer with a cheque for $500 and Best Dressed Business with $750.

Get geared up for the Sunshine Festival parade!

smFB4A1428

Calling everyone with a sense of fun and community! The Geraldton Greenough Sunshine Festival organisers are urging everyone from individual walkers, clowns, skaters and bike riders to car clubs, sporting groups, businesses, community organisations and those with a motorised mobility scooter to sign up for this year’s Festival Float Parade sponsored by MMG.

MMG representative said “They are once again very pleased to support a long standing tradition in Geraldton to celebrate culture and diversity in the community.”

This year sees the TS Morrow Navy cadets celebrate 50th years and therefore take lead of the 2014 MMG Float Parade.

The Parade will start later in the day this year and follow the same route as past years. The parade is scheduled to commence at 2.30pm Saturday October 4 from the west end of Marine Tce (near the Midwest Ports Office), traveling along Lester Ave, Cathedral Avenue, turning right into Carson Terrace and right into Maitland Park. The 2014 Parade promises to once again be a highlight of this treasured community event.

Sunshine Festival Committee chairperson Julian Canny expects this year’s parade to be better than ever, with a new focus on individual participants as well as traditional float parade entries.

“The streets will come alive with music, dance, colour, laughter and all sorts of hilarious antics as people strut their stuff through the heart of Geraldton,” Julian said.

“We had many great float entries last year and this year we expect even more, as well as more entries from individuals and groups on foot to really add to the carnival atmosphere.

“We’re expecting veteran and vintage vehicles and a mediaeval group of swordsmen and jousters. We’ve also recruited a group of people in electric wheelchairs and gophers who will jazz up their vehicles with riotous decorations, and we’re also encouraging bike riders of all ages to decorate their bikes and take part, as well as people of different cultures in traditional dress, dancers, skateboarders – the possibilities are as big as your imagination.”

Prizes this year are: Best commercial float $500, the best community group float $500 and the best recycled theme float $500, while the individual prizes for best decorated kids bike is a new bike from Revolutions Geraldton and the best decorated gopher prize is $200.00.

Julian said the parade was an excellent way for businesses and community groups to showcase their organisation, and have a blast while they are at it.

“It’s a really fun-filled way of advertising your business or community or sporting group,” Julian said.

“And the more outrageous your entry, the more attention you’ll command.”

Entry fees are $75 for commercial and $50 for NFP/community group and entry for children’s decorated bikes and individually decorated gophers are free.

Completed float parade entry form should be lodged no later than Monday September 15. Entry forms can be downloaded from the website www.sunshinefestival.com.au or by contacting festival coordinators - Event Nation on 08 9964 6088.

Blue Shaddy to rock Geraldton

image002 Before Blue Shaddy hit the East coast for a number of high profile music festivals including Queenscliff and Narooma’s Great Southern Blues in coming months, they’re set to explode on stage & set the dance floor alight again at Geraldton's Freemasons Hotel on  Saturday 6th September.

Australian Blues/ Roots/ Country band 'Blue Shaddy' are a band with connections, given that founding members, Jim McClelland, (guitarist singer/songwriter) Graham (Belly) McClelland (harmonica) and Sandy McClelland (bass guitarist) are family.

Born and bred in the Western Australian town of Kellerberrin these three have not lost that rustic, relaxed country charm that has endeared them to so many. Known for their infectious amalgam of blues /roots, come country played with an energetic physical presence and power that leaves you with a broad smile and a new found energy.

'Blue Shaddy's musical path was inevitable with brothers Jim and Belly sharing a small house on the family farm, and with television banned from the house, considered poison for the brain these two would sit at the kitchen table and trade Hound Dog Taylor and Sonnie and Brownie licks nightly for months on end.

A meeting soon after with like minded, and also musically spirited 'Sandy Naughton' found her also sitting at that same table going through what was to become the Blue Shaddy apprenticeship. Some 19 years later, Jim and Sandy have now married and along with Belly have maintained a passionate and unwavering commitment to their music, forging their way on festival circuit and gaining fans far and wide.

With these three as the driving force behind 'Blue Shaddy', a band is still not totally complete without a drummer.

Having had the pleasure over the years of playing with some of Australia's finest skin men, 'Dean Wuksta', Chris Oldman, Conrad Parker, Rick Eastman, and Arun Satgunasingam, 'Blue Shaddy' now joined forces with newest recruit, Callum Kramer.

Kramer also being a long term friend of the band played his first gig with 'Blue Shaddy' at 9 years of age, when the drummer at the time had turned up late. Kramer with wooden spoons for sticks and a bucket load of raw talent, filled in for the first set and the 'Blue Shaddy' team knew they had just found their 4th wheel.

With Kramer's skin work now being described as, a young 'Ginger Baker' combined with Sandy's rock solid commitment to holding down groove these two have moulded a tangible chemistry, allowing Jim and Belly the freedom to once again trade those licks and bring together their raw exuberance and understanding of each other’s musical talents. 'The result is a whirlpool of foot stomping infectious energy.'

Pre-sale tickets on sale now from the Freemasons Hotel Bar, $25 (or $30 @ door on the night).

Missy Higgins announces Geraldton show

Missy1

Beloved Aussie singer/songwriter Missy Higgins has just announced a one-off Australian tour called OZ and she will hit the Geraldton stage on October 15th.

The announcement of this special concert series follows hot on the heels of two other major Missy announcements. Firstly she revealed that she is due to give birth to her first child in early January (hence her strictly limited touring plans). Secondly she just unveiled a brand new album of eclectic Australian cover versions and a companion book of essays. Both the album and the book are called OZ.

OZ - the album, and OZ – the book, will be released on September 19.

Now comes news that OZ ... the tour ... will commence in Cairns the day after these book and album releases. Fittingly the strictly limited tour will then take the ARIA Award winning singer/songwriter right around Australia before finishing in her hometown of Melbourne on October 29.

The concerts will see Missy combining some OZ songs with her own classics such as “The Special Two”, “Scar”, Steer”, “Where I Stood”, “Unashamed Desire” and Everyone’s Waiting”.

Special guest on the tour will be acclaimed young singer/songwriter, Dustin Tebbutt whose evocative songs “The Breach” and “Bones” have made him one of triple j’s most played new Australian artists.

Also appearing on most dates will be Jherek Bischoff who co-produced OZ. Jherek has worked with leading innovators including David Byrne (Talking Heads) and Amanda Palmer.

Explaining the OZ project Missy said, “I wanted to put together a group of wonderful Australian songs just as a different sort of challenge. I wanted to avoid all the obvious ones though because “Great Aussie Songbook” collections have kinda been done to death. All that mattered was whether I felt I could make the songs my own so the tracklisting ended up as a real mixed bag of lollies.”

“Then I thought it might be fun to also try writing some essays to accompany the music in various ways and that lead to the book.”

“The essays and the music are meant to be enjoyed together like I’m nattering away while the album plays. But, of course, if people just want to just enjoy them separately then that’s fine too.”

Most local listeners will probably already be familiar with classic OZ songs like Paul Kelly’s “Before Too Long” or The Angels “No Secrets”. However, this will be many people’s first encounter with gifted composers like Sydney taxi driver Perry Keyes (“NYE”) or Melbourne art-rock combo The Drones (whose epic “Shark Fin Blues” is one of the album’s centerpieces). Then there’s works like the indigenous anthem “Blackfella/Whitefella” and Slim Dusty/Joy McKean's country classic “The Biggest Disappointment” which deserve to be heard outside the communities in which they’re already iconic.

Throw in critically acclaimed artists like The Go Betweens (“Was There Anything I Could Do?"), Don Walker (“The Way You Are Tonight”), Neil Murray (“Calm & Crystal Clear”) and Something For Kate (“You Only Hide”) plus the accompanying book and it’s clear that OZ is not ’just another covers album'.

Over the last decade Missy Higgins has become one of our most beloved singer/songwriters. Her three previous albums, The Sound of White, On a Clear Night and The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle, have sold more than a million copies. They’ve each gone to #1 on the Australian charts and each has also been recognised with ARIA Awards.

Missy Higgins will play to a Geraldton audience on Wednesday, October 15th at the Queens Park Theatre.

One man's romp through a swamp

Swamp Juice will hit the Queens Park Theatre on August 19th and the shadow puppet comedy about one man's romp through a swamp has received rave reviews.

A review from the Edinburgh Spotlight said, "Gasps of wonder and amazement!"

With other reviews claiming it was, "One of the most spellbinding moments of puppet theatre I have ever encountered.”

Following on the award-winning Sticks Stones Broken Bones, Jeff Achtem presents imaginative shadow puppet stories made from bits of rubbish. His shadow adventures have no dialogue, and the visual look of 'live' cartoons.

In Swamp Juice, the puppeteer guides the audience through one man's encounters in a swamp; bickering snails, a neurotic snake and an opera singing mouse.

As the action builds to a climax in Swamp Juice, the shadows move off the stage and dance around the walls of the theatre. Then, the audience are given 3D glasses to experience the 3D shadow puppetry finale. It's a riviting and unforgettable illusion.

Swamp Juice will appeal to all ages above 7, and most certainly not just for kids.

Quiz night with a great cause

Anyone who has followed the Geraldton Buccaneers from back in the mid-nineties will remember valued player Roneil Powell. Ron was part of the 1997 Buccs team featured great players including Dan Hunt, Greg Brown and Andrew Kennedy.

Ron was known for being a true team player.

On Sunday February 2, former Buccs import player Roneil Powell, 43, unexpectedly passed away of a cardiac arrest.

The devastating news comes just days after the family’s 4-year-old son Ezequiel was diagnosed with a rare form of inoperable cancer.

Ron is American and his wife Alex Porrata, daughter Yolanda and son Ezequiel reside in California’s Marin County.

On a website dedicated to Ezequiel and Ron, Ron is described as, “a beautiful man, beloved by everyone who knew him.”

Ron is remembered as being team orientated and loved his friends and family. He was down to earth and enjoyed life, especially his time in Geraldton. He even became a fire fighter around 2002/03 (after September 11).

To help out Ron’s family, the Geraldton Buccaneers will host a Quiz Night on Thursday, 31st July 2014 to raise much needed funds to help with the ongoing medical costs for Ez.

The funds will go to the family through the website to help care for Ron’s family.
