Geraldton gets behind World's Greatest Shave

It seems as though locals aren't afraid to get rid of their locks as many will shave their hair next month for World's Greatest Shave!

Yesterday Everything Geraldton asked if there was anyone who was taking part in the shave and the response was huge.

From children to adults, people doing it for a loved one or friend and some who just want to help out the cause, there are many generous and brave people who will shave their hair to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Blood cancer is Australia’s biggest cancer killer, after lung cancer.

More than 11,500 Australians will develop leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma this year –  or a person every 46 minutes.

Right now, more than 50,000 Australian families are facing the physical, emotional, and financial challenges of blood cancer.

Money raised from the World's Greatest Shave funds blood cancer research and free support through the Leukaemia Foundation

Here are some of our local stories:

Over the last couple of years I’ve watched a number of people fight the battle with leukaemia. Five years ago I was a bone-marrow donor.

Last year I again took part in ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’ and couldn’t agree more with the promotion that labels participation as a “a life-changing experience”, so I’ve decided to do it again.

It’s well worth doing. And last year (pictured left) Deputy Premier and Minister for Health Hon. Kim Hames MLA was keen to shave my noggin and he gave me a very close trim on the steps of Parliament House.

Today, 31 Australians will get the news they have blood cancer. Donations to participants in the World’s Greatest Shave will help the Leukaemia Foundation.

Any money donated will also help to fund Australia's best blood cancer research. The money you raise helps the Leukaemia Foundation provide emotional and practical support free of charge to people with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.  We also fund critical blood cancer research into better treatments and cures.

Funds also go towards critical blood cancer research into better treatments and cures.

So, if you’d like to donate to a wonderful cause head to http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ianblayney where any contribution would be gratefully received.

-Yours sincerely, Ian Blayney

My name is Peter Tua and I am doing the World's Greatest Shave.

Until August last year, I lived in Mullewa where I was the Hardware Manager at Mullewa Farm Supplies, then we (my wife and I) moved to Bunbury for my wife's job. (She's a Nurse Manager and used to manage Mullewa Hospital).

If you would like to read my story as to why I am doing the WGS, please feel free to take a look at my fundraising page http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/petertua

I am travelling back to Geraldton to do my shave. It will be held at DY hairdressing on Chapman Rd at 12pm on the 15th March.

Andy is shaving his dreadies off for the Greatest Shave. I've opted to dye my hair if Andy can reach $700 in donations.

No real reason for doing it, we just want to help in any way we can!

I am shaving my head as I figured it was an easy way for myself to help out a good cause. I have already raised about $500 which is awesome because I was only expecting to get  $200. For the big shave, I will be doing it as entertainment at my sisters wedding on march the 22nd. This is the link to my donation page: http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/liambertworldsgreatestshave

My name is Lauren Ziatos and I am shaving my head on March 15th for the World's Greatest Shave.

I am shaving my head in support of my beautiful husband Kye Ziatos who has recently been diagnosed with in curable cancer of the appendix, liver and lymph nodes, being 28 and a father to a young family this is obviously tragic news for us, living with it everyday does get hard but I have never met someone so strong and positive that he WILL fight this nasty disease!

So to show how much I support him I am shaving my head and all money raised will be going towards cancer research as this is where he would like the money to go! So that there will one day be a cure and no one else has to go through what we are at the moment, I understand shaving my hair doesn't let me know how my husband feels going through it himself but it does show my support not only to him but to every one who has fought this disease or who is currently fighting and unfortunately to the beautiful people who sadly lost their fight!

So to everyone one fighting, stay positive! Your mind is a powerful and wonderful thing!

My name is Denise Kobelt and I am doing the Worlds' Greatest Shave.

I am doing it with Helen Cream. Helen is organising to go it at the Stirling's Shopping Centre on the 15th of March starting at 10:30am, shaving at 12:00pm.

There isn't really a reason why I am doing it, It's something that I have thought about before but have never gone through with it, but this is a year for doing instead of talking.

In memory of his nan, Irene Dann who we lost to Leukaemia in December 2013 my son Jacob is shaving his hair to raise money for the foundation.  Jacob is an 18 year old apprentice at Geraldton Toyota.

Hi my name is Megan law and I am taking part in the World's Greatest Shave and shaving my head. My best friend a former Geraldton girl got diagnosed with cancer at the end of last year and is going through chemo at the moment.

So instead of her being bald by herself we are gonna be bald together! I'm also a nurse who has worked in palliative care and over the years I have seen lots of people young and old suffer with cancer.

So this is my way of giving back. I am holding a public shave event on the 15th of March at the Geraldton Hotel in the beer garden from 1-4pm. There will be face painting and am looking at holding an auction or raffle off items donated by local businesses. People can come down and shave or colour for a donation $20 to shave and $10 to colour. And if people are registered with the Leukaemia Foundation it is free.

Go to www.worldsgreatestshave.com, click on sponsor someone and put in my name- Megan Law.
