Everything Geraldton was inundated with reports of a loud bang around midnight last night which was caused by a car explosion.

Local residents as far as Beresford were woken up by the massive explosion which happened in Stansfield Road in Narngulu.

The vehicle had reportedly been abandoned on the road for some time.

A resident who lives nearby said it shook her home.

"I was asleep and then I heard the noise and the whole house shook," she said.

"I ran outside to see the flames just across the paddock from where I live."

The fire caused damage to nearby bushland but was kept under control by local firefighters.

The car is completely burnt out and still remains at the site.
