Blessings for Bjorn

In November 2014, Bjorn Tranquim (age 13) - youngest son of Nalini & Sandro - was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) - which is a serious progressive genetic disorder.

Bjorn's older brother, Ramon, had tests to see if he was a sibling match for Bone Marrow Transplant - but he was not found to be . This meant Bjorn qualified for Stem Cell Treatment, only available in the U.S.A.

The family are now relocating to Los Angeles so that Bjorn can commence treatment at UCLA.

I believe God laid on my heart the idea of fundraising for Bjorn - and Nalini was in agreement when I asked if this would be a blessing to their family.

Nalini and Sandro will be unable to work whilst they are living in the US.  All donations made will go to the Tranquim family to help them with expenses for the duration of Bjorn's treatment (which will be approximately 6 months).

Nalini commented on her Facebook page in December:
"Please continue to uphold Bjorn and our family in prayer as we face what lies ahead. As the lyrics go in 'Stripes' - 'Standing now with open arms upheld by Your right hand. Lifting my head toward heaven let Your glory shine, let Your healing, divine healing arise'.  We hang on to our Lord and Saviour because He alone holds the future in the palm of His hands. Nx"
[Nalini is a worship artist who released her new album "Today Tomorrow" in November 2014 - you can find further details on her website:  http://www.nalinitranquim.com
'Stripes' is one of the songs off her album]

Please donate to the family if you feel led to - and please take time to leave a message of encouragement for Bjorn.  He will be in isolation for several weeks during the course of his treatment and Nalini is sure that reading messages of support will boost his spirits immensely.

Messages of support can also be emailed to Bjorn at: blessingsforbjorn@gmail.com if you don't wish to make a donation.

Please pray for them all as they embark on a huge journey to the other side of the world, and for healing for Bjorn through the treatment.  God's will be done!

God Bless,
Fiona Davidson ~ family friend

Hebrews 12:1-3
Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!

$2.7m continues local alcohol and drug service

Member for Geraldton Ian Blayney MLA has today announced that WACHS Mental Health has been awarded more than $2 million over the next five years to continue operating the Midwest Community Alcohol and Drug Service, with offices in Geraldton and Carnarvon, and outreach to many other communities.

WACHS Mental Health has offered alcohol and drug services in the local community for 15 years.

Mr Blayney said the funding that ensures treatment and support for people battling alcohol and other drug problems will continue locally until 2020.

This funding has been announced alongside a further seven five-year contracts for Community Alcohol and Drug Services (CADS) which have been awarded to service providers across WA.

As a funding package the eight new contracts comprise $60 million over the next five years.

“We know people are battling problems with alcohol and other drugs throughout the State, and people can now continue to get help close to where they live, which can be a vital point of difference between someone seeking help or not,” Mr Blayney said.

With the contract in place, the Midwest service – along with others throughout WA - will be known as Community Alcohol and Drug Services (CADS).

“Most people come to our treatment services for problems with alcohol, so the new name makes it clear that these services are here to help people with alcohol as well as illicit drug problems,” Mr Blayney said.

CADS services operate in four metropolitan Perth corridors, in addition to seven services in the Midwest,Wheatbelt, South West, Great Southern, Kimberley, Pilbara and Goldfields.

The 11 CADS services combine to provide alcohol and drug services across 27 offices in different communities.

The services provide free out-patient treatment, referrals, counselling, education and support to adults, young people and families.

The Metropolitan-based services operate as integrated services and are delivered through an innovative partnership between the State Government’s Next Step service and specific non-government service provider partners.  The integrated services provide medical, counselling and support services from a single site.

Be rip aware in Geraldton this summer

Summer is here. In Gero that means lots of sunshine, heat and trips to the beach.

Each year surf life savers and passing locals have to rescue swimmers who get themselves caught in rips along our coast, so take a few moments to get educated on what a rip is and how to avoid trouble.

Info from beachsafe.org.au/surf-ed/ripcurrents

What is a rip?

When waves break on a beach, they push water towards the shoreline. Once that water reaches the shore, it has to find a way to get back out to sea, and it does this by flowing downwards into deeper channels in the surf zone. Once the water is in these deeper areas, it can flow back out to sea away from the shoreline. These deeper channels are called rip currents.

How dangerous are rips?

Rip currents are the number 1 hazard on Australian beaches being responsible for at least 21 drownings on average per year, as well as being the cause of many rescues. Rip currents often lead to drowning when swimmers attempt to fight the current trying to swim directly back to the shoreline, become exhausted and begin to panic.

Rip currents can also be deadly for non-swimmers as a person standing in waist deep water can be dragged into the deeper waters of the rip current, where they can drown if they are unable to swim and are not wearing or holding a flotation device.

How do you spot a rip?

The key signs to look for are:

  • Deeper darker water
  • Fewer breaking waves
  • Sometimes sandy coloured water extending beyond the surf zone
  • Debris or seaweed
  • Sometimes it’s easier to look for where the waves are breaking consistently, and then look to each side where they don't break consistently. That’s the rip current!

What do I do if I get caught in a rip?

If you get caught in a rip current, you need to know your options:

  1. For assistance, stay calm, float and raise an arm to attract attention.
  2. While floating, rip currents may flow in a circular pattern and return you to an adjacent sandbar.
  3. You may escape the rip current by swimming parallel to the beach, towards the breaking waves.
  4. You should regularly assess your situation. If your response is ineffective, you may need to adopt an alternative such as staying calm, floating and raising an arm to attract attention.

These may sound like simple options, but rip currents are complex, dynamic processes and all responses also have their pitfalls. You could float on an unpatrolled beach and not be returned to a sandbank with no-one there to help. You can also swim parallel and end up swimming against a longshore current which can flow along a beach; this will see you get tired quickly. Therefore, the best thing you can do is avoid them!

The best thing you can do is stay out of a rip current in the first place!

The best ways to do this are:

  • Always swim between the red and yellow flags
  • Learn how to spot rip currents and avoid them

City urges home renovators and DIYers to be Asbestos Aware

In a stark message to all home renovators, tradies, handymen and DIYers, the City of Greater Geraldton is helping drive a campaign to make people more aware of asbestos as part of Get to Know about Asbestos this November.

Many Australians wrongly believe that only fibro homes contain asbestos. With asbestos products still commonly found in and around brick, weatherboard, clad and fibro homes built or renovated before 1987, it’s vital that homeowners, renovators, tradesmen and handymen are aware of asbestos.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor, Ian Carpenter, said home renovators and tradies need to be asbestos aware, and learn where asbestos might be found in homes and on properties and how to manage it safely because it’s not worth the risk to themselves or to their families.

“In Geraldton the predominant issue is asbestos sheet fencing and rooves and eaves. With the winds, fences often get damaged and sheets need removing, so it’s important that the entire sheet is taken out, not pieces left in the ground,” he said.

“Earthmoving contractors also need to be on the lookout as sometimes blocks being cleared can have asbestos buried or littered and get caught up and spread around the property leading to a major contamination issue which is expensive to remediate.”

He encourages people to visit www.asbestosawareness.com.au to find out more information.

Chair of the Asbestos Education Committee, Peter Dunphy, said asbestos could be anywhere.

“Under floor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings and ceiling space (insulation), eaves, garages, roofs, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, garages, outdoor toilets, backyard and farm sheds, chook sheds and even dog kennels”, he said.

“No one can tell if a product contains asbestos just by looking at it. Only scientific testing by an accredited National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) can confirm if asbestos is present. If people aren’t sure if a product contains asbestos they should treat it as if it is asbestos and take all the necessary precautions to protect themselves and families.

“However, to be sure if asbestos is in homes, owners can have properties inspected by a licenced removalist or a licensed asbestos assessor to confirm if asbestos products are present,” said Mr Dunphy.

“If in good condition and left undisturbed, asbestos generally doesn’t pose a health risk. Although, with the aging of homes the popularity of DIY, renovating, knock-down-rebuild and with the redevelopment of old fibro home sites, it’s important that anyone working in or around homes or buildings constructed or renovated before 1987 know the dangers of asbestos and how to manage it safely.

“When homes contain asbestos DIY is not recommended and renovating properties without knowing where asbestos might be located has been likened to playing ‘Renovation Roulette’.

“Don’t play Renovation Roulette! Don’t cut it, don’t drill it, don’t drop it, don’t sand it, don’t saw it, don’t scrape it, don’t scrub it, don’t dismantle it, Don’t tip it, don’t water blast it, don’t demolish it, and whatever you do, don’t dump it!

This Doctor should not have been allowed to practice in Geraldton

Dr John Myers has been found guilty of professional misconduct by the State Administrative Tribunal, following his actions at Geraldton Regional Hospital in June 2012.

Extracts from the SAT decision:

  • Dr Myers is guilty of professional misconduct between 14 and 19 June 2012
  • On an occasion when the patient was doing a crossword in her room, Dr Myers entered [the patient's] room and shut the door behind him, moved behind [the patient], while enquiring how she was, put his right arm over her shoulder and fondled one of [the patient's] breasts without her consent.
  • Subsequently went to leave the room, said words to [the patient] to the effect of 'he would have another hug' and then hugged [the patient] and fondled her breast again while doing so, without her consent.
  • The following morning, Dr Myers said to [the patient] words to the effect that 'he felt a lot of ladies needed a breast massage in the hospital but not to tell anyone because they'll all want it'.
  • One evening, Dr Myers visited [the patient] and kissed her on the cheek and said words to the effect of 'Goodnight sweetie, I'll see you tomorrow'.
  • On another occasion, Dr Myers attempted to hug [the patient] while she was standing and asked her to kiss him.
  • Dr Myers said to [the patient] on several occasions, words to the effect of 'he wanted her to suck his cock' and 'he wanted to put his cock between her breasts' and 'rub his cock all over her body'.
  • Dr Myers also told [the patient] how gorgeous she is and while standing next to her said words to the effect of 'feel it, see how stiff you're making me'.  On that occasion, [the patient] told Dr Myers to go away and behave himself.
  • Dr Myers did so but returned an hour later saying words to the effect of 'he was going to be good but couldn't help himself'.
  • One day, [the patient] was about to get up to have lunch when Dr Myers came into her room, leaned over and patted her twice on the bottom.  When the patient looked up in response, Dr Myers said words to the effect of 'it's alright but I just wanted to smack your bottom'.
  • Dr Myers touched and rubbed [the patient's] knee and stroked her hand.
  • On various other occasions, Dr Myers said to [the patient] words to the effect that:,1.9.1 'if she had a computer, they could make passionate love over the computer', 'think of him when she makes passionate love to her husband', 'he would like to get inside her robe with her', and said to [the patient] words to the effect that: he had a double bed at his house and gave her directions to go there and stay with him one weekend and, she was sumptuous, beautiful and sexy.

During the submissions it was noted several times that Dr Myers was not responsible for the patient, referred to only as PJD, and Dr Myers struggled to give an answer as to why he attended her.

Dr Myers maintains his innocence, and claimed that the patient was manipulative.

The SAT board disagreed with Dr Myers' stating that the "allegation that PJD was manipulative, without any basis for that allegation, strikes us as an attempt to attack PJD's integrity so as to detract from Dr Myers' conduct and statements."

The matter of what the penalty will be is still to be decided.

The Medical Board is to file and serve submissions on penalty within 14 days of these orders.

Dr Myers is to file and serve submissions in response on the question of penalty within 42 days of the date of these orders.

The doctor in question, who was practicing in Geraldton but was from Victoria, also had past findings against him:

  • Indecent assault in 2000
  • Unprofessional treatment of an elderly couple in 2000/01 including creating a "destructive relationship between the couple and their children"
  • "Unprofessional conduct of a serious nature" in 06/07
  • Had his registration cancelled in 2013 following a relationship with an infatuated patient from 1999 to 2008.

This drone could reach a drowning person four times quicker than a human lifeguard

Every year, local volunteer life guards as well as search and rescue operators are put through their paces in the Mid West, but soon a new technology may be available to help keep our coastline safer.

An Iranian company are planning a purpose built drone or UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) which drop life preservers to drowning people.

From Bloomberg Businessweek:

Amin Rigi says drones should be used to save lives, not spy or kill. The Iranian, who has a bachelor’s degree in robotics engineering, is launching RTS London to manufacture flying robots that drop life preservers to drowning people. His selling point is speed: A video shot on the Caspian Sea shows his prototype reaching a swimmer in 22 seconds, four times faster than a lifeguard.
Preorders have poured in from 25 countries since Rigi, 27, posted the one-minute demonstration video on YouTube. He aims to ship his drones, which could cost up to $10,000 each, by mid-2015. Rigi, who will soon relocate to London to take part in an accelerator program for tech startups, predicts his business, which is developing an array of rescue robots, “will lead a revolution,” unleashing the power of drones to do good.
Pars is an Aerial rescue robot which is designed and made for saving human lives. The first purpose of building the robot is the relief of people drowning near coastlines. By developing its applications, it can be used in ships and off shore reliefs.

Year 12 student misses graduation after tragedy

Yesterday on the 25th of October, 2014, a 17 year old classmate of mine Ben Phillips, known and loved by many within the Geraldton community, suffered a burst aneurysm on the left side of his brain whilst diving for crayfish. He has since been flown down to Perth for treatment in critical condition, and his family are awaiting results accessing the extent of the damage. His life is still hanging in the balance.

His classmates, including myself, have sought to raise money to assist the Phillips' family for medical/travel/hotel and all manners of other expenses. Your help needed to find sick girl's family

My 9 year old daughter is sick and the Drs need additional information from my side of the family tree which I don't have.

My name is Kristy Logan and I'm looking for anyone who may have known a man called "Ted Steers" who lived in Geraldton or near here around 35/40 years ago. I know this is a long shot.

I wouldn't be doing this at all if it wasn't a medical emergency. This will be kept private but my daughter needs help or I wouldn't be asking.

If someone can HONESTLY help her then please call 0448387690. Please no crank calls as I have enough to deal with and am finding that going in this direction hard enough as it is. Thank you.

Anyone with info can even go through a third party so they don't have to deal with me if that is what they are more comfortable doing. I will do it any way they would like. My daughter is only 9 and doesn't have a say, so someone please, please help us. Any information on "Ted Steers" especially medical, would be a god send for us.

Sincerely

Kristy Logan

Superhero Mascot to raise Indigenous immunisation rates in Midwest and Goldfields

A superhero will travel through remote Indigenous communities in the Midwest and Goldfields to raise child immunisation levels above the national standard, thanks to a $20,000 GSK Immunisation Grant.

The new mascot has been deployed by Goldfields-Midwest Medicare Local, armed with education materials and health professional assistants as part of the “Immunisations are for everybody” program, explains Program Officer, Kathleen Slootmans.

“Only 77.1 per cent of 12-15 month old Indigenous infants in the Midwest community, and 87.1 per cent in the Coolgardie region are fully immunised. Our aim is to increase this to 90 per cent within 12 months,” says Kathleen.

“Our new superhero mascot will be more relatable for children than the usual immunisation promotional materials. He’s a happy, colourful and muscular looking boy wielding an immunisation rocket that makes needles a bit less scary.”

The immunisation mascot will be officially launched on Tuesday 21 October as part of the Geraldton Regional Community Education Centre’s Children’s Week event, and his community-chosen name will be revealed.

“We’ll also be handing out our colour-in storybook which is targeted towards Indigenous children and their families. The story is based on a conversation between two children, their mum and grandmother on the importance of immunisation.”

The immunisation roadshow will begin on 26 November covering Carnarvon, Kalbarri and Shark Bay before heading to the Goldfields and Kalgoorlie region early next year.

“We’re running the roadshow in partnership with other local health agencies such as WA Country Health Service and Bega Garnbirringu Health Service, which already utilise a mobile clinic in remote and rural areas to deliver health services.”

“We’ll also link-in with schools, day care centres, private practices, community health centres, the Carnarvon Hospital, Carnarvon Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation and True Culture, True Care to plan out the best approach locally. Resources are often stretched so this grant is a good opportunity for us to link-up and reach as many children as possible across both regions.”

“Where we can’t provide immunisations on the day, we’ll at least be able to assist with consent forms and arranging future immunisation sessions.”

The GSK Immunisation Grants is one of Australia’s longest standing programs encouraging innovation and sharing best practice for immunisation providers.

Dr Mark Amies, GSK Vaccines Medical Director, said the grants are about enabling local solutions to local problems.

“We’ve seen some fantastic initiatives over the last nine years of the program and we’re proud to be able to support public health care,” said Dr Amies.

Dog bites Geraldton man

Posted in the Geraldton Neighbourhood Watch group by Amalina Razak-Wilson on Wednesday evening:

**WARNING** gruesome photo!!
Hi guys,
My husband got attacked by a dog tonight about 9:30pm, he said it looked like a stray and had no sign of any obedience at all.
This was on first st in wonthella, corner of NWCHighway. He was going from his mates house to the car when the dog jumped out of no where and attacked him.
The dog went straight to his face but he managed to block it with his forearm and was forced to kick the dog off him.
He described the dog as big and brown, looked like a bull mastiff.
He explained that the dog was tall and went up to his waist, he is 6"2, the dog had no collar.
His friends in the car said that they saw another dog accompany that dog but didn't do anything. I haven't had a chance to report to rangers, I will in the morning.
Just please if it is your dog, keep it locked up, you wouldn't want this happening to a child that can't defend themselves. He is in hospital and staying overnight and will be seeing surgeons tomorrow for a possible surgery.
Matthew (who was bitten) has 9 stitches.

Free mental health training

Free mental health training is available to community members in October thanks to sponsorship from Local Drug Action Group (LDAG) Inc, the Mental Health Commission and the WA One Life Suicide Prevention Strategy.

Geraldton LDAG convenor Kate McConkey said the training is an opportunity for people to learn more about mental illness and suicide.

“This training will help people understand the risks, signs and impacts of mental illness and suicide, and learn how to respond in a crisis situation”

“There is a huge stigma around mental illness and people don’t really like to talk about. The provision of training is an important step in generating discussion and raising awareness about how we can all play a role in preventing suicide”.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training is in Geraldton on 20th & 21st October and 23rd & 24th October, and Youth Mental Health First Aid Training is in Mullewa on the 23rd and 24th October or 27th and 28th October.

People interested in attending the training must attend both days and register with Kate McConkey on 0429 104 920 by Friday 17th October.

Youth Mental Health "headspace centre" to open here in Geraldton

Good news for Geraldton. Headspace have announced they will be opening a centre here in Geraldton.

It's expected to be open toward the end of 2015 or early 2016.

Full media release below.

Thousands more young Australians will get the help they need for problems affecting their wellbeing, after the Minister for Health, Peter Dutton, announced the next 15 headspace centre locations.

In welcoming the announcement, headspace CEO Chris Tanti said the new centres will extend the important early intervention work of the national youth mental health organisation into areas of significant need.

"Through our existing headspace centres we've helped thousands of young people with issues ranging from depression, anxiety, relationship break downs, bullying, exam stress and problems with alcohol and drugs," Mr Tanti said.

"These additional locations will bring us to a national network of 100 headspace centres. Together with our online service, support to schools and expansion to help young people experiencing early psychosis, we can help thousands more young people and their families no matter what issue they're facing."

"Many of these communities announced today have advocated strongly for headspace centres to be established in their areas, so we know these centres will be highly valued. We also know there are many more communities across the country in need of support for their young people," Mr Tanti said.

The 15 locations announced by the Federal Government today are:

New South Wales: Griffith - Murrumbidgee (Griffith), Orange, Sydney - Castle Hill, Broken Hill - Far West (Broken Hill), Goulburn.

Queensland: Moreton Bay - north (Caboolture), Gladstone, Brisbane east (Capalaba), Bundaberg

Victoria: Swan Hill, Melbourne - Greensborough, Gippsland (Bairnsdale), Grampians (Horsham)

Western Australia: Geraldton

South Australia: Limestone Coast (Mount Gambier)

Mr Tanti said determining the locations of the new headspace centres is based on a range of factors to ensure headspace services are delivered in the areas of greatest need.

"We take into account distance from existing headspace centres, the current and future population size, social and economic factors, accessibility of the location and the readiness to set up a headspace centre," Mr Tanti said.

The process to determine locations for centres is done in consultation with the Department of Health, headspace and the State and Territory Governments. The final decision is made by the Commonwealth Government.

The additional centres are part of the 2014-15 Federal Budget commitment of an additional $14.9 million to support expansion of the headspace network by 10 centres, bringing the total to 100 across Australia.

Young people who do not have convenient access to a headspace centre or would prefer to get help online, can access eheadspace.org.au - a free, confidential and anonymous telephone and web-based mental health support service.

About headspace

The primary focus of headspace is the mental health and wellbeing of young Australians. headspace helps 12 - 25 year olds going through a tough time through a national network of 70 headspace centres (soon to be 100) and online and telephone counselling service eheadspace.

headspace can help young people with general health, mental health, education and employment and alcohol and other drug services.

headspace was established and funded by the Commonwealth Government of Australia in 2006.

G-Force shows appreciation of City employment

City CEO Ken Diehm is presented with a certificate of appreciation from G-Force Executive Officer, Tony Cooper, along with (from left) City staff - Manager, Corporate Services, Jeff Graham, Acting Sanitation Supervisor, Dave Meneguzzo, Acting Parks Manager, Graham Smith; and Director Community Infrastructure, Neil Arbuthnot.

The City of Greater Geraldton was recently presented with a framed certificate of appreciation from service contractor, G-Force, in recognition of the City’s continued support in employing G-Force workers with a disability.

Presenting City CEO Ken Diehm with the certificate, G-Force Executive Officer, Tony Cooper, said it was organisations like the City that has allowed the not-for-profit company to be successful.

“Without the likes of the CGG assisting us with this, we would not be where we are today,” he said.

“For a number of years now, the City has used G-Force to provide staff to assist with the street sweeping of Marine Terrace and Foreshore Drive under the guidance of Parks Manager Kim Trotter and Sanitation Supervisor, Stuart Gilchrist.”

G-Force recently won the Goodness Festival 2014 Best Social Enterprise in Geraldton Award.

“This was a great outcome as we continue to strive with our mission of employing people with disabilities within the community, on full rates of pay,” Mr Cooper said.

“G-Force does not receive any form of government funding and we have to source our own contracts.

“We are able to offer services in all aspects of garden care and clean up, commercial cleaning, window cleaning and document and paper shredding.”

Mr Diehm said he is pleased the City is able to support G-Force.

“The City recognises the value of this work and the social investment in getting people back into the workforce,” he said.

G-Force can be contacted on 9964 3525 or www.gforcecontracting.com
