Geraldton gears up for Bikeweek

Every year Geraldton embraces Bikeweek in a big way and this year is no exception.

Bikeweek is a collection of events held across Western Australia from March 15 to 23 that encourages people of all ages to take up cycling as a healthy and inexpensive mode of transport and the City of Greater Geraldton along with some local businesses, supports the initiative.

However, Geraldton pedals the Bikeweek event even further starting it on March 3 with the Bikeweek Commuter Challenge, rolling on until March 30. Get a team of four from your workplace to see who can cycle the most kilometres from home to work during bike week - there are prizes to be won.

Geraldton Bicycle Users Bikeweek is on again in 2014 and is an opportunity to celebrate and thank those who choose to leave their cars behind and ‘Cycle Instead’ in the spirit of the Bikeweek theme. Visit the Department of Transport website for the full Bikeweek calendar of events.

City of Greater Geraldton Active Travel Officer, Bronwyn Neville, said there are so many Bikefest events to choose from and the main aim is to have some fun, improve or maintain fitness levels and adopt a healthy, inexpensive mode of travel.

“There are plenty of events for young and old, fit, and not-so-fit cyclists – such as Roll With Us/Cycle Chic - for the beginners, Why Not Wednesday - for cycle commuters, Night Ride - for all ages, Ride2School Day for school children, Try Ride/Tune up for those getting back on the bike, Time Trial for serious sport cyclists or join in the Fun Ride,” she said.

Bikeweek 2014 participants are encouraged to nominate their favourite event for the inaugural Bikely Award by clicking www.transport.wa.gov.au/bikeley-award-survey

“Those who nominate will enter a draw to win one of three $500 vouchers and there are prizes or giveaways for all events,” said Ms Neville.

“So grease up your garaged bike, polish your racer or get that mountain bike out for a spin and get to one of our fun-filled, family-friendly events.”

Registration for events is essential. To find out more detail about these events and to register visit the City website at www.cgg.wa.gov.au/events
