Man on the run after bus rollover on Brand Hwy according to witnesses

We have just received reports from a person travelling on the Brand Hwy who says they have come across a bus that has rolled, 190km south of Geraldton.

The man, named Shaun, spoke with us about what he saw.

He says he was informed by authorities at the scene that bus had been stolen by a prison escapee. There was no-one else in the bus apparently when it rolled. (Update- Police have stated the man left a rehab centre in Northam)

The person who was driving the bus seems to have fled on foot.

"It's the scariest thing I've ever come across on this road," Shaun tells us. He says based on the state of the bus he expected there to be multiple fatalities.

Ambulance and fire services were at the scene.

Witnesses described the person who fled as a caucasian male, but we are waiting Police confirmation of the suspect.

If you come across a hitchhiker in the area please contact Police.

Shaun tells us he came across the bus around 8:15pm this evening.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

- Update 9:26pm; We've spoken with Police several times and they have been unable to confirm or deny any particulars of what witnesses have told Everything Geraldton, other than to say a crash has occurred.

- Update 7:53 am - Police say the man is from a rehab centre in Northam. He stole the bus before crashing it and fleeing the scene.

Roll over Brand Hwy

Leeman Police are attending a vehicle roll over on the Brand Hwy this morning.

They are asking the public to slow down and follow their directions.

It appears a vehicle towing a caravan has rolled. The incident occurred near the intersection of Coorow Greenhead Road.

One lane is open to traffic.

Brooke, a passerby who assisted at the scene and sent in the above image said the people involved were fine, "just vehicle damage."

Alleged drug dealer hit by car on Chapman Rd

Police say a 21 year old female driver from Northampton was driving a Mazda hatch yesterday along Chapman Rd near Mitchell and Brown when a cyclist rode his bike onto the road and collided with her vehicle.

The 33 year old man was intending to cross the road, but had entered the path of the oncoming Mazda. He wasn't wearing a helmet, and ended up with abrasions to his knees and elbows, a cut to his head and a fractured vertebrae.

Police were called to the scene, and found the cyclist was carrying more than your typical pushbike rider.

It was established the cyclist has in his possession of a quantity of dexamphetamine, an undisclosed quantity of cash and other drug paraphernalia.

As a result of those inquiries, the cyclist was charged with possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell/supply, failing to give way from land abutting and failing to wear a protective helmet. He will face Geraldton Magistrates Court at a later date.

Bus stop saves the day after elderly driver mounts curb and hits cyclist

Police were called to Francis St in Geraldton on Thursday 22/1/15 after receiving a call about a cyclist being hit by a vehicle.

Police say that an elderly driver of a white Toyota Corolla was attempting to turn around and accidentally reversed at speed mounting a curb, impacting with a fence, then colliding with the cyclist.

It appears the fortunate placement of a bus stop seat saved the cyclist from being seriously injured, who walked away with cuts and bruises.

Police are conducting inquiries into the suitability of the driver of the vehicle to hold a drivers licence. There are no charges pending at this time.

Driver who flipped car Christmas Day has this message for other drivers

"Just a reminder to everyone to please drive safely this Christmas. Just yesterday on the way to a family lunch for Christmas I fell asleep at the wheel, hit the curb and flipped my car multiple times before resting against a power pole.

"I'm told I was extremely lucky to be alive seeing as the roof caved in and I was pinned between the seat and the roof. Although my car is now totaled, I'm just so very thankful that I survived this ordeal and very thankful for all the people that stopped their Christmas celebrations to come and help me.

"Thank you to all the police, and ambulance officers that were very quick thinking and to the staff at the Regional Hospital Geraldton ED for putting up with me, being so caring and getting things done quickly.

"So my message to everyone driving this Christmas, please don't work too hard and if you start to feel sleepy, please...PULL OVER no matter how much of a hurry you may be in. I was lucky to escape with my life, next time someone might not be as lucky."

Ian Blayney calls on Minister for Commerce to investigate high fuel prices in Geraldton

Geraldton MLA Ian Blayney has written to the Minister for Commerce, Hon Michael Mischin MLC, asking him to investigate the high cost of fuel in Geraldton.

“This is not the first time I have written to ask why fuel is so expensive in Geraldton, but I hope this time there will be a full investigation into the matter,” said Ian Blayney.

“The difference between the average prices of fuel in Perth to Geraldton at the moment is 24.4 cents per litre.

“This seems to be inordinately high and I’m hoping the Department of Commerce will thoroughly investigate this matter to determine why it is so.

“While I accept that there may be extra costs associated with the freight of fuel to Geraldton, this appears to be excessive.

“ I am also concerned that the margin between the wholesale cost of fuel and the retail cost appears to be greater than it has been previously, and I would like some answers to these not unreasonable questions’” said Ian Blayney.

“The people of Geraldton and the Midwest are required by the geography of their location to drive long distances; they should not be paying more for fuel than is required.”
