Geraldton Grammar School is on top of the results board after NAPLAN

Whilst NAPLAN is not the only indicator parents should use when choosing a school for their children, it is a measure used nationwide to reflect the numeracy and literacy levels of all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy.

It is fair to say that results generally indicate a school’s commitment and dedication to teaching students the basic skills they will require throughout their lifetime, which these days cannot be underestimated given society’s reliance on spell check and calculators, rather on an individuals’ natural ability to spell and count.

This year’s results are in and Geraldton Grammar School has once again claimed its place on the top of the results board, proving itself as the leading educational institution in the Midwest.

Geraldton Grammar School ranked 4th in secondary numeracy of any school north of Perth, 10th overall in secondary regional schools and 21st overall in primary regional schools across Western Australia.

Geraldton Grammar School Principal Nick Johnstone, said he was thrilled but not surprised with the results given the calibre of staff at the school and their commitment to ensuring students have a firm grasp of basic literacy and numeracy skills.

“Our teaching staff are exceptional. They do not rest on their laurels, and will persevere with each and every student until they totally understand numerical and literary concepts,” said Mr. Johnstone.

“Small class sizes obviously help us with making certain each student gets appropriate assistance as and when required. It also allows teachers to identify issues sooner rather than later due to an increased ability to spend individual time with each student on a daily basis.”
