Prescribed Burning Alert - Glenfield 30th July

Waggrakine Bushfire Brigade will be conducting a Hazard Reduction Burn on a block at the corner of Macedonia Drive and Alexander Drive, Glenfield on Saturday 30th July starting at approx. 8:30am.

We advise that people avoid the area to allow crews to work on the control burn.

There will be smoke from the burn and advise on the following:

• Close all doors and windows
• Turn off air conditioning 
• Remove clothes from washing line
• If you suffer from asthma or have breathing difficulties we advise you relocate away from the smoke 

We thank you for your cooperation whilst we conduct this Hazard Reduction Burn.

Regional Grants Scheme funding for Geraldton

• 5 Geraldton Regional Grants Scheme recipients announced
• Projects funded by $10 million investment over 2016-17 financial year
• Made possible by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program

The Mid West Development Commission has today announced the grant recipients of the region’s Regional Grants Scheme, made possible by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.

Nationals WA Member of Parliament and candidate for the seat of Geraldton, Paul Brown MP said the Regional Grants Scheme provided one-off grants to community, public and not for profit organisations to improve and develop infrastructure and services in the region.

“The scheme provides grants of between $50,001 and $300,000 to support region-specific projects that are driven by local communities,” Mr Brown said.

Projects supported through the Regional Grants Scheme in Geraldton are Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community Aboriginal Corporation, National Trust of Australia, Sun City Care Inc, ATLAS and Foodbank Geraldton. 

Mr Brown said the Regional Grants Scheme assists in attracting investment, increasing job opportunities and improving the quality of life in the regions.

“This funding will support dedicated community organisations in making Geraldton and the Mid West region a better place to live and will contribute towards the long term sustainability and vibrancy of the region,” Mr Brown said.

“I am pleased to see Royalties for Regions investing in such a diverse range of projects that will enhance Geraldton and support local-decision making.”

The State Government, through the Royalties for Regions program, will invest $10 million into the Regional Grants Scheme for the 2016-17 financial year.

The Drummond Cove Coastal Erosion

Nationals WA Member of Parliament and candidate for the seat of Geraldton Paul Brown MP, was joined by Leader of the Nationals WA and Minister for Regional Development and Lands, Terry Redman MLA, in a visit to the Drummond Cove foreshore last week to see firsthand the coastal erosion that is occurring there.

Mr Brown said, “While I am personally very familiar with the issue as both a committee member of the Drummond Cove Progress Association and a resident living close to the impacted area, I thought that having the Minister visit the site to see the erosion and how it would impact the community is vital to having the State Government invest in immediate temporary protection and a long term solution.”

The City of Greater Geraldton recently approved $50,000 for emergency sand nourishment at Drummond Cove to help mitigate damage expected from high swells predicted for last weekend.

“The Minister was able to see the sand nourishment work that was being done by the City of Greater Geraldton to reduce the impact of the severe storm that was predicted. It was really good to see that the works did reduce the impact, and the sand held really well.” Mr Brown said. 

“The Minister was quite alarmed when I showed him where the original foreshore had been and the very recent damage from a number of severe storms. He was able to clearly see the risk to public infrastructure such as the waste water pumping station, but also the very real concern that residents have for what may happen to their homes if nothing is done to prevent further damage.”

Geraldton traffic needs should be prioritised

I’m confident that we all understand that we are at the bottom of the economic cycle at the moment and that the upswing is still some way off in the future. But this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be developing projects that the state government can invest in to diversify our economy and create short to medium term employment in the process.

One of the projects that the State Government had prioritised for development of the economy of Geraldton and the Midwest region was the Oakajee Port and Rail Project (OPR). The OPR project would have created a once in a lifetime investment opportunity for this region that would have a lasting economic impact regardless of future boom and bust cycles.

Some pretty large chunks of money were put aside for development for this project, but due to a number of on-going factors we were never able to get agreement between potential operators and port users. In fact, the Premier, Colin Barnett, has publicly said that this was one of the single biggest challenges that he has faced over the two terms of this government.

So where to now with the $338 million that was set aside? The money that the state government was to put towards the project has gone to other worthy projects across WA, and the dollar for dollar co-investment that the federal government was going to contribute has also disappeared.
There are certainly a good number of transport and road building projects that would underpin considerable employment in the short to medium term and the federal government needs to be playing a very large role in investing in these projects in this region.

Number One for my money is the widening and duplication of North West Coastal Highway through Geraldton between Utakarra Rd and Chapman Valley Rd roundabout. Not only does this stretch of the highway need to be ‘double lane’ the entire way, it also needs to be widened considerable between Eight St and Place Rd to allow for turning lances at the traffic lights. It also need to be straightened from Place Rd to Webberton Rd through some of the CSBP land.

The price tag on this project is expected to be approx.. $220 million.

This would also mean a much safer stretch of road for all road users, removing congestion and high risk driver behaviour immediately from three primary schools that are directly impacted – St John’s, Allendale and St Lawrence’s – allowing for better traffic flow at peak times in that area. Also not forgetting that most of the buses that service Geraldton schools utilise this stretch of highway as well. It will also make it much more truck friendly and we should also consider widening the outside lanes to give road-trains and smaller vehicles more confidence to share the road together.

Duplication of that stretch at Utakarra/Eastward Rd’s would also encourage development of the existing empty parcels of land like the old council depot site, while straightening the stretch though CSBP site will make it much more attractive for redevelopment.

Currently our population is at about 41,000 but we should be aiming to that increase considerably over the next few decades towards 100,000. While we will never see the level of congestion that Perth experiences daily, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t also be planning for the future expansion of Geraldton now.

GRAMS NAIDOC Week Finale on Friday 8th July

Due to the wintery weather expected on Friday July 8, GRAMS NAIDOC Week finale celebrations will now be held indoors at the QEII CENTRE at 88 Durlacher St, instead of the new Geraldton Multipurpose Centre. The event will bring together entertainers, storytellers, dancers, bush tucker samples, poetry and life in a kaleidoscopic celebration of Aboriginal culture.

From 6pm – 9pm on Friday July 8, anyone within the Geraldton community can enjoy this free community event by indulging in free ‘bush tucker’ samples, including kangaroo sausage rolls, crocodile tempura, Emu Patties and more (while supply lasts). Kangaroo tail stew and soup will be available later in the evening. 

Entertainer Phil Walley-Stack will MC the event and deliver a digeridoo performance in traditional costume, while local poet and elder Nola Gregory will recite a poem she has penned especially for the event. Aboriginal elder Clarrie Cameron will share a yarn or two in line with the NAIDOC theme, Songlines the living narrative of our nation.
Children are invited to try their hand at traditional artwork under the guidance of local artist Marrika Laudehr.

Ikwahn Café will have food and drink on sale. Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service chief executive Deborah Woods encouraged people of all ages and backgrounds to come down and also enjoy live music from local band, Morning Sons.
