Geraldton Roads And Why You Need To Protect Your Car

Sponsored by…

We all know the stresses of car ownership, especially here in Geraldton. An unfortunate combination of harsh weather conditions and loose road surfaces can cause a number of paintwork problems…

1.    Stone Chips.

If you ever want to drive out of town, these are pretty much unavoidable on bitumen road surfaces.

2.    Faded Paintwork.

This is an unfortunate downside of the awesome weather we get here in Gero. Over time the sun will fade unprotected paintwork.

3.    Paint Cracking.

This is caused by the sun heating your paintwork (especially dark colours) and cooling rapidly in the night.

4.    Dust Contamination.

Another price we pay for living in this beautiful part of the world. This is where dust particles can actually set into your paintwork, and can be extremely difficult to remove.

How can I protect myself against these problems?

The guys over at Dark Star are now installing the new SunTek paint protection film to protect your car against these previously unavoidable paintwork issues.

The benefits –

  • A tough barrier to eliminate damage caused by stones, insects, salt and debris.
  • Self-healing topcoat – Scratches and chips disappear with engine or sun’s heat.
  • Nano technology construction to create a strong solvent resistant barrier.
  • High gloss topcoat to match your pristine paint finish.
  • Superior optical clarity for invisible protection.
  • Can be easily removed at any stage, helping to improve future resale value of your vehicle.

Geraldton gets a taste of Triple J’s hottest

Triple J regulars, I Know Leopard will head to Geraldton this weekend as part of their national tour for The Set List for one massive outdoor show at Lot 601 on the Geraldton Foreshore.

The band, who hails from Sydney, is excited to make the journey up to Geraldton after a successful tour so far in WA including Margaret River.

“We are really excited for Geraldton, as we will play amidst a festival so that sounds super fun,” said the bands frontman Luke O’Loughlin, “WA is a truly beautiful, peaceful state and we absolutely love having the time and opportunity to explore it right now [as part of the tour].”

I Know Leopard will be touring as part of an innovative new concert format called The Set List, that aims to bring young people on board to help plan and be the decision makers for the event.

“The Set List is a wonderful opportunity for us to engage with audiences that would otherwise be outside of our reach.” O’Loughlin said, “It's also great to be able to play all ages shows.”

Supporting I Know Leopard on their tour will be two local groups, The Inks & Carfax who were chosen through a competition by the band.

“This show will be one of the biggest shows I have ever played,” said local performer Carfax who will support I Know Leopard on Saturday, “I am extremely excited and honoured to say that I will be supporting such a unique and talented band.”

The I Know Leopard concert comes as part of the collaboration between the Sunshine Festival, G Fest and the City of Greater Geraldton as the inaugural Festivals on the Foreshore event, which has seen a weeklong of activities and events on the Foreshore.

“I really think Geraldton needs this and want this because I feel like I Know Leopard is bringing something fresh and new to the community’s ears,” said Carfax.

The event will see gates open in Lot 601, across from the Geraldton Regional Library at 4.00pm with the first act kicking off from 4.30pm.

Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased before the show at the QPT website, or on the gate, this is an all ages event.

Promotion: Growth versus Greed and Neglect

Greed

In years gone by a previous CEO invested City funds into dodgy American investments pursuing growth at all costs with disregard for the wellbeing of our community, in the end losing us as ratepayers millions of dollars.

In 2012, ratepayers were slugged with a rate rise of an average of 27% rather than seeing City administration costs slashed.

There has also been a case put by people in the iron ore industry that Point Moore would make a good port facility/ warehouse area. Imagine what the residents think of that! Who represents those guys?

Neglect

Since 2000 under the stewardship of people who are candidates in this election we saw assets neglected at a City wide level, in the pursuit of an ever growing City. If you can’t even look after your playgrounds how on earth will you look after your growth plans?

Change

The Change that is needed is to begin focusing on what we have and valuing that. We must change our greed and growth at all costs cycle and ensure we can live within our means. We must change and begin listening to our community and deliver quality assets in a low risk, sustainable manner. That is true Change.

Time to Vote

The time to vote is now, so help me make the changes we need as a City and support me for Mayor.

Promotion: 5 Ways to be Car Prepared This Summer

It’s that time of year again – summer is edging closer, and all we want to do is hide away in the comfort of the air-con. Life goes on though, as is necessary, and if there’s one you need to keep in check in the heat, it’s your car.

There’s nothing more important than being prepared when it comes to safety, so here’s 5 ways to be car prepared this summer…

1.    Always bring water.

We all know the importance of keeping hydrated, especially in the summer. Safety is paramount at all times, so it’s best to keep a bottle of water handy. You don’t have to keep heaps, obviously more is better, but a 2 litre is sufficient.

Don’t be the one who gets caught out, because you never know when it’ll be you with the bonnet up on the side of a lonely stretch of road.

2.    Make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure.

We can’t stress the importance of tyre pressure enough. If the pressure’s too low, there’s too much surface are on the road and you risk a rupture. If the pressure’s too high, there’s too little surface area on the road, which can make the car bounce around.

Always keep your tyres at the correct pressure. In most cars, there’s a sticker inside the driver’s door that tells you the correct tyre pressure. If you’re unsure at all, it’s best to take your car to a professional.

3.    Check oil and coolant levels.

This is to ensure that your car doesn’t overheat.

You can check the levels by looking at the dipsticks in the engine bay. If you are unsure how to do this, then take your car to a professional.

4.    Get your air-con checked.

No one wants to be stuck in a sweltering car, especially in 40+ degree heat.

Take your car to a mechanic or auto electric specialist and get your air-con checked out. It’s cheap to have it re-gassed and you’ll thank yourself for being prepared.

5.    Have your car serviced.

For peace of mind, the best option is to let a professional handle everything.

You can get your car serviced pretty cheaply these days, and you know everything’s in check.

Get down to Kris’ Mechanical at 308 Place Road, Geraldton 6530, or give them a call on 0428 949 777

Promotion: Van Styn: Your Chance To Vote Is Now

By now you should of received your postal voting kit. This is your chance to vote for who you trust to set the direction of the City of Greater Geraldton. In reality you really have 2 choices:

1)      Vote for a long serving former CEO, a long term former member for Geraldton, or a long term current Mayor and stick with the current way Council is run; Or

2)      Vote for someone with new ideas and a new focus.

As a member of the latter group I represent a new focus for Council. One that is focussed on ensuring we get back to basics and deliver the services and assets that our people really want. How will I know what people want? By listening…

Taking the time to vote may seem like something that won’t make a difference but nothing could be further from the truth. You see it is not just the result that matters but the margin of a win that matters.

A larger win shows a mandate to other members of Council that the public have loudly spoken as to how they feel about the direction that candidate has set out during their campaign.

If you think Council should stop wasting money on administration and airy fairy talkfests and get back to providing the basics of roads, recreation, reserves and rubbish then vote for me, Shane Van Styn. If you want to show your support for lower rates I ask you to once again support me and my fight against the crazy rate rises.

C’mon Geraldton, let’s turn out to vote and send a clear message we want our City back listening to and serving the people. Let’s change for the better.

Promotion: Old V New Leadership: A Clear Choice

Does Geraldton want new leadership and direction or does it wish to remain with the same set of leaders we have had for more than a decade? Postal vote kits will be in your letter boxes this week so you can read the Mayoral candidate profiles for yourself and decide.

Voter turnout in Geraldton typically runs around 30% of eligible voters. Over the last 2 years I have seen electors throw out half a Council and yet still feel as though their message is not getting through. The answer: Increase voter turnout for a stronger message and change the leadership.

There is a great field of candidates in the Councillor elections with a mix of new and existing candidates.  Voters really do have a chance this year to set a new direction should they turn out. It certainly won’t take long to read the profiles of the candidates and send back your vote.

If you don’t like what is happening to playgrounds or crumbling infrastructure vote for change. If you don’t like crazy rate rises, again vote for change. Do you want your free tipping back, perhaps kerbside recycling?

If you think Council should stop wasting money on administration and airy fairy talkfests and get back to providing the basics of roads, recreation, reserves and rubbish then vote for me, Shane Van Styn. If you want to show your support for lower rates I ask you to once again support me and my fight against the crazy rate rises.

C’mon Geraldton, let’s turn out to vote and send a clear message we want our City back listening to and serving the people.

Promotion: Geraldton’s $30 Million Cost Of Not Listening

In 2006 whilst 80% of Greenough voters voted against merging with Geraldton, the City went ahead and merged anyway.

In 2011 83% of Mullewa voters voted against merging with Geraldton-Greenough and 80% of Geraldton voters against; again the will of the people was ignored.

These mergers led to a bloated administration that costed ratepayers upwards of $30 million since 2007 based on the $3.6 million we saved this year alone. Ratepayers were right!

When times got tough in early the early 2000’s rather than address costs our leaders decided to invest in failed financial products known as CDO’s, costing the City more than $2 million in lost capital and earnings.

The next solution was in 2012 to increase rates by 27% despite the protests from ratepayers. Astonishingly in 2013 a proposed rise of 7.2% was proposed after a massive public backlash from the year earlier. I fought hard against both of these rises and finally got to see some sense in 2013 when rates were lifted by only 1.5%. I fought for a freeze that year, as I believed we should be looking for savings. In 2015 my message is now getting through.

As Mayor I will ensure the voice of the community is always put to Council and is taken seriously. We need to move on from the old ways of Council not listening and begin respecting the will of the ratepayers. Too often when a ratepayer complains to me about a decision of Council, I ask them why they did not make a submission or attend a meeting and I get in reply “They don’t listen so why bother.” This is a sad state of affairs and we need to change our ways and restore confidence in our Council.

Let’s move on from the errors of our previous ways. Let’s live within our means and get Council focussed on what it is really supposed to be doing; providing day to day municipal services our City needs.

Promotion: What A Load Of Rubbish

We have been hearing a lot of airy fairy statements about nothing by mayoral candidates lately. Catch phrases like “collaboration”, “vibrancy” and the like are everywhere but with a total lack of detail about what it all means. It is time to talk about actions, not gloss over the problems our City has.

Verge side collections this year were cancelled, tip fees introduced and kerbside recycling again missed out. The displeasure with this decision has been brought to my attention numerous times by many people. This week I travelled with a very concerned ratepayer to the back of Utakarra to witness the massive illegal dumping problem. I openly admit to being shocked at the scale of the problem and now believe that the City must reconsider its decision to scrap the verge side collection. Funding for the reinstatement of verge side collections can easily be found from budget savings. Yes a service may need to be scaled back elsewhere but rubbish collection is the most fundamental of services a City delivers.

Kerbside recycling is expensive and delivers a lower environmental benefit than most would think. If however the community want it they have a right to do so. I will call for a community workshop to explain the costs and expected environmental benefits of kerbside recycling and if the community wish to pay an extra levy for the service, then the City should work to make it a reality. The City budget could also be looked at again for savings to fund some of the cost. Ratepayers have the right to be informed on this issue and have a right to prioritise this service.

Council needs to get back to basics and focus on what its real job is. Reserves, roads and rubbish. Afterall, you can’t have a vibrant City if you have rubbish everywhere.

Let’s start listening to ratepayers and providing the services they want. Let’s change for the better.

CALS WILL TO WALK

Callan Bancilhon was born in 1990 with a streak of excitement in his blood. He was raised into a life of motorbikes and fast cars and rode in his first race at the age of 7, setting him up for a life of competition, triumph and thrills - this kept his family on the edge of their seats.

Callan was 12 years old, racing motocross at a State Level, when everything came crashing down. Callan’s destiny changed forever that day, it was September 22nd 2002 at the Northwest Round in Paraburdoo. It was the last lap, Cal was leading, he took the last corner and headed for the table top, these would be the last few moments that Callan remembers. The bike flew over the jump, but stalled in mid-air, he rode it out, but without any brakes Cal was unable to level the bike and that’s when everything went terribly wrong. Callan came crashing down and not only did he take a massive fall, but the bike landed on the back of his head. He was knocked out instantly, and there he lay. Our lives would never be the same. A life changing moment all in a split second.

From there he was air lifted by the RFDS to Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) where he was put into an induced coma which lasted 10 days. Doctors didn’t think he would survive, and we lost him twice in that time, but he fought back. The prognosis was discouraging and the hope of him waking was very slim. So we sat by the bed every waking hour talking to him and begging him to come back to us. We weren’t ready to let him go, and luckily Cal wasn’t ready to give up either. The diagnosis was a (TBI) Traumatic Brain Injury. The main damage being found in the Basal Ganglia and Left Temporal Lobe area. After 10 long days and nights it was time to bring him out for the 3rd time, which miraculously worked. Cal then spent the next 5 months in PMH fighting for each day; this would be where he would face another major hurdle in his young life.

Despite the medical team’s prognosis, Cal proved them all wrong. He would now ride out the most important race of his life. Each day, as supporters, mechanics and pit crew we were all busy making sure at the start of each day he was cleaned and fuelled, ready to kick ass. Ensuring he got back on if he fell off and making sure he knew he had our full support right until the end. He was now competing for his quality of life, and each day we were seeing more than ever the courage, the support and the friendship that kept us pushing to reach the podium. Cal battled through the sweat and tears and re-learnt how to walk and talk again, day by day... the simple things in life that we all take for granted.

From there on, each day counted and every treatment was attempted. It became a painful and very exhausting obsession for all of us. Cal travelled to Melbourne on several occasions to undertake 5 week intensive hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions, he underwent operations countless times including Bone Grafts, endured numerous Botox injections , all while weekly visits were continued to Bowen Therapy, Acupuncture, Kinesiology Reiki, Hypnosis, Magnetic Healing & Point Percussion therapies. We were desperate for recovery.

12years later we are still seeing results and never give up hope. In January this year, Callan travelled to America and visited one of the world’s best rehabilitations centres, “Project Walk” He met with therapists and explored his options. They wanted Cal to come back and we wanted nothing more but to see him strive to reach his full potential. With the costs reaching 10’s of thousands of dollars we had to be realistic and come up with a different option.

Through further research we stumbled across a spinal injury rehabilitation program based in Perth called “Walk on” Although Cal does not suffer from a Spinal injury, they were happy for us to access the program. So we then spent 2 weeks with daily appointments in Perth and for the first time in close to 12 years we saw Callan walk correctly, swinging his arms, and with a massive grin on his face. Family and friends of Cal were left with goose bumps; words could not explain the inspiration felt in that room. Each small step, tears dropped to the floor – Our little legend was at it again heading for that podium.

After the 2 weeks of training using the new exercise program we were advised Callan’s muscles were strong enough to recover and he could develop a correct walking pattern by doing certain intense exercises. So we were off home to find a Personal Trainer. And Cal was back to the gym 5 days a week with a new spring in his step

Callan is now booked to go back to “Walk On” for 3 week program at the end of July. Unfortunately though, this program is not a Government funded resource, therefore all costs have to be covered upfront by patients attending this centre. On a single wage Callan’s mother, Julie has worked very hard to help finance Callan’s rehab. She is an amazingly strong mother, her strength, love and commitment to Callan is astonishing- standing by his side to support him through all types of twists and turns. She has resorted to working away so she can provide the best for her family, as well as fund the assistance Cal needs to keep achieving his rehabilitation goals. However at more than $100 per hour, it has become a very expensive treatment but and we would really love to be able to continue as we can see the improvement in Cal already.

Sadly some days his disability gets the better of him and he loses all motivation, but Callan is very blessed to have a circle of very physically & mentally powerful people that empower him to strive and keep pushing on. Life hasn’t always been easy, but with every small victory that Callan has, it is just a reminder of how lucky we are to have this guy with us, and for that, we appreciate and take on every struggle with the desire for his improvement.

Anyone that has had the opportunity to meet Cal, will know, he is a very witty and sometimes quite cheeky character. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and thank Cal’s Support team. The friends that have stuck by his side and continued to push him; the boys that took him under their wings and the girls who let him get away with being so cheeky! To his Mother for her unconditional love, my best friends for all the times you picked me up at my worst, Cal’s Nan and Pop for putting your life on hold for us, and to all of our extended family and friends for their continued love, strength and support, we thank you!!.

We want nothing more than for Cal to ride high and settle for nothing but his best, he has the world at his feet and we are here every step of the way. For those of you who have taken the time to read the story of this incredible son, brother, nephew, grandson cousin and friend Thank YOU for joining his support team!

Every dollar counts and won’t go unnoticed.

Thank you for all your love.

Neglect and a lack of forward planning.

Geraldton has a long history of failing to maintain its assets and the effects of this have really become apparent of late. Remember the Flores / Place Road intersection, the crumbling Recreation Ground grandstand, the derelict railway station building (Tourist bureau) and the completely run down CBD footpath network?

Previous leaders of our City did nothing about these for many years. Rob Jefferies was CEO of Geraldton for 7 years! It was after his period that Tony Brun and our current CEO Ken Diehm began rejuvenating the City. I was on the selection committee to appoint Ken and have complete faith in his ability to deliver on the budget cutbacks required to balance our budget.

This year the City identified savings of $3.6 million. Imagine if the City had of done that since the amalgamation in 2007, which was supposed to deliver savings. That equates to more than $30 million by the end of this year. Think what the City could have done with that money! We could be debt free and we could replace every piece of playground equipment that has recently been removed. We could even have kerbside recycling.

Calling for the budget to be returned to surplus means progressively maintaining assets, to ensure they last longer and getting Council back to the basics of roads, reserves and rubbish. It is nice to have grandiose motherhood statements on vibrancy and economic development but until you can get your basics right it will all be for nothing.

Hiking up rates by the crazy 27% in 2012 and then asking for a further 7.2% the following year is the lazy way of restoring the budget and hurts the very people we are elected to serve. We must live within our means and continually look for ways to do more to ease the financial burden on ratepayers. This means making strong decisions in regards to services and our administration.

Let’s not return the bad old ways of the past, let’s look forward and change our City for the better.
