You wont get in to One Night Stand if you're under the influence of alcohol or drugs

“Do not attend the event if you are under the influence of drugs and alcohol as management of the concert will refuse you entry.”

That's the message to concert goers from Geraldton's Senior Sergeant Brad Bird.

“We are taking a zero tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour, drugs and alcohol,” he said.

There will be a large contingent of police from the district, specialist units and support units as well as sniffer dogs and mounted police. There will also be other covert resources to identify people that are under the influence of any illicit substances.

As well as a massive police presence, there will also be security guards and rangers conducting patrols of the venue surrounding areas.

Visitors that are staying at tent cities are also reminded that alcohol is not permitted. Police will patrol and those caught drinking alcohol at these locations may be fined and removed.

Everything Geraldton has had multiple people contact us asking about whether they'll be able to drink beforehand, thinking that "alcohol free event" just means the bar isn't open. But the message from event organisers and police is clear that anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol won't be allowed in.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn reiterated the messages from police saying he hoped everyone would enjoy themselves.

“This event will showcase Geraldton to the rest of Australia and I urge everyone to abide by the no drugs and alcohol rule,” he said.

The all ages, drug and alcohol free event presented by triple j will take place at Wonthella Oval this weekend, Saturday 9 April. Click here for more information.

Amazing feedback from children's event in Spalding Park run by Lions Club

What a beautiful day for our Children's Party today, had so many thank us for putting this on again. To make so many parents, grandparents and children this happy just absolutely makes my heart sing..... We had about 300 under 12's attend, and the weather really turned it on... The trains ran non stop (all 4 of them) and the kiddies just loved them.

Debie (the fairy) was painting non stop for the entire time she was there, and she did some wonderful painting and thanks to all the little people for patiently waiting in line and Mums and Dads too.

Hop on a Pony had 2 adorable ponies working their gorgeous hearts out, they love their work ( Jai told me one is 20 years old and the other is 15) I was so so tempted to pat one, but given my past experience with allergies to horses I thought better of it... Our trusty Lions had noses to the grindstone, and our vollies did a fabulous job to lend a hand, so thank you to you all for a job well done.

Sharon the fabulous icecream lady was almost melting at the end of the day, thank you once again Sharon. you did great.

Gloria Stanley-Smith (Facebook)

Looking forward to next month at Spalding Park as the playground equipment is said to be installed in a week or so....some happy kiddies and parents then
We will be doing this again, on the first Sunday of December, so put it in your diaries... Cheers to you all

Gloria.

The Batavia Story needs to be told - Russell Crowe may be the man that will do it

Attendees at the CEDA Conference held in Geraldton last week were treated to an account of the gruesome true story of shipwreck, sex, slavery and mass murder that is the ‘Batavia’ by the man who wrote the book – columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald - Peter Fitzsimons.

Brought to Geraldton by the Mid West Development Commission as Keynote Speaker for the conference, Mr Fitzsimons highlighted that the Mid West could put itself on the global stage through the telling of Australia’s best story. He also alluded to the fact that he was in the process of negotiating the rights of his book on the ‘Batavia’ to become a film to non-other than Academy Award winning Australian actor Russell Crowe.

On the subject of opening up of the Abrolhos Islands for tourism, Mr Fitzsimons said that it was a great opportunity for the region and that it was important to ensure that its existing charm be maintained.

The eco and sustainable development of the Abrolhos Islands is one of six key tourism opportunities that was identified as having the potential to accelerate the Mid West economy in the Mid West Tourism Development Strategy. The strategy was a direct result of the Mid West Regional Blueprint. The first of the six opportunities identified in the strategy is already well underway with the construction of the Kalbarri Skywalks due for completion by June 2017.

Department of Regional Development Director General Ralph Addis, Mid West Development Commission Chair Murray Criddle, Peter Fitzsimons and Commission Chief Executive Officer Gavin Treasure.
