Yalgoo to Come Alive with Outback Hilarity
/Yalgoo is gearing up to come alive from 8.30am – 10.00pm with colourful crowds for a day out full of outback hilarity at the Yalgoo Emu Cup Fun Day & Family Concert on Saturday October 8.
This year the event is doing away with the traditional games in favour of an assortment of new family friendly activities. There will be crazy fun with activities such as ‘soccer bubbles’ (think human dodgem cars for children and adults), crazy bikes, jumping balls, fishing ponds, supervised swimming pool and hopping balls. There will also be the supervised PCYC climbing wall.
And of course there will be the opportunity to dress up for, and watch, the side-splitting spectacle of the day’s theme event – the Emu Cup, in which people of all ages wear handmade (on the day or bought with them) emu costumes before tearing down the race strip in a hilarious performance.
Festivities will kick off with the Doray Minerals free community breakfast from 8.30am to 9.30am, for everyone to enjoy.
Free MMG workshops on the day will include dance and make up, hip hop, percussion and drumming. Activities continue throughout the day as do the games and competitions.
Junkadelic band members will lead the Emu Costume fashion parade with some help for their percussion and drumming workshop attendees.
From 5pm everyone comes together for a family concert where cup-goers can kick up their heels in the red dirt and under dazzling night skies to the lively festival tunes of Junkadelic, solo artist - Chook Pickett, local DJ “ODie”, leading Aboriginal hip hop artist Bryte, and the 2016 headline act, fresh from their overseas tour, is multi-award winning soul sisters The Merindas.
Food and drinks are on sale throughout the day and evening. The 18+ bar area is open from 5pm – 10pm. The evening will culminate in a spellbinding fireworks display.
In the lead up to the event, on the Thursday and Friday, children can take part in MMG-sponsored dance hip hop workshop for boys and makeup, dance and costume making workshops for girls, with results of their efforts delivered as part of the Family Concert.
As in previous years, there will also be mini emu sculpture making workshops and judging, with winners taking home token cash prizes.
Mr Brenzi invited people from far and wide to join Yalgoo residents in the family friendly day, with its own brand of quirky outback entertainment.
“We’re known for doing things a bit differently in the outback and the Yalgoo Emu Cup Fun Day and Family Concert is an excellent example of that,” Shire CEO Silvio Brenzi said.
“The day is a brilliant way of coming together, revelling in our colourful community spirit and enjoying a hilarious day of activity, fun and laughter. It’s that kind of special event that leaves you feeling truly connected to your fellow humans – no matter what your race, or background, or age. Here everyone comes together with the sole aim of having a seriously good time and a truckload of family fun.”
“Come join us in the action.”
Please note that Yalgoo has very limited accommodation options so make your booking early at either the Caravan Park (9962 8472) or at the pub (9962 8031) or be prepared to bring a swag!
The event is made possible with the generous support of Tourism WA, Department of Regional Development, Royalties for Regions, Lotterywest, MMG, Doray Minerals LTD, Centacare Family Services, Water Corporation, Shire of Yalgoo and Radio Mama
