The Rage Cage - New addition for the youth of Yalgoo

Yalgoo might seem like an isolated settlement, but it has something no other  place in the Mid West can boast – a Rage Cage.

An ‘import’ from across the border in South Australia,  the Rage Cage is an innovative concept that allows different forms of sport to be played inside the one steel structure, with soft flooring of recycled rubber reducing any risk of injury.

Yalgoo Shire might be small, but its councillors did some big thinking on how a Rage Cage could be best utilised for its youth.

Rage Cage became the base of a complete activity area with a playground, BMX track and a water playground, something no old-time resident would ever have dreamed of.

It wasn’t cheap - the water park cost $500,000, funded by Royalties for Regions through the Country Local Government Fund (CLGF), and the Dept of Sport & Recreation through the Community Sporting and Recreational Facilities Fund (CSRFF).

The covered sports element, which includes the Rage Cage, is expected to come in with a final cost of around  $920,000.

Yalgoo Shire Council is using its own funds to finalise some elements but otherwise the playground was funded by CSRFF, CLGF, Royalties for Regions through the Mid West Investment Plan, and Variety The Childrens’ Charity, which funded the playground equipment.

That would be a commendable project for any local council, let alone Yalgoo with its town population of around 180, with a permanent Shire population of just over 400.

It is a ‘first’ and Rage Cage inventors Leon and Dianne Purdy are hoping to see their idea spread further across regional Australia. Check out www.ragecage.com.au
