Help clean up your local area for Clean Up Australia Day

Clean Up Australia Day is just about upon us once again and there are many simple ways to help take action to clean up, fix and conserve Australia’s prized environment.

In 2012 more than 590,000 volunteers across Australia cleaned up 16,169 tonnes of rubbish, but Clean Up Australia is urging everyone to join a team and do better for 2013.

As in previous years, March is shaping up to be a busy one as there are numerous sites around Geraldton registered for the community to assist with cleaning up.

To participate in the community clean-up it is important to register to an event close to your location; registering can be done on the day, or electronically beforehand on http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/join/?location=6530&kw .

Sites that have officially been registered so far include:

Sunday, March 3:

  •   Batavia Coast Marina – Ablution block at Wiebbe Hays Lane, Geraldton from 8am to 10am.

  •   Marine Terrace – Swing at Marine Tce, West End from 8am to 10.30am.

  •   Glenfield Beach Drive – Drummond Cove from 9am to 11am.

  •   50 Cent Swing – Marine Tce from 8am – 10.30am.

    Thursday, March 7:

 Girl Guides – Sixth St, Wonthella from 8.30am to 12.30pm. Saturday, March 23:

  •   Chapman River Regional Park – Chapman Rd, Spalding from 3.30pm to 5pm.

  •   Separation Point Close – Separation Point Lookout, Beachlands from 9am to

    11am.

The City of Greater Geraldton is waiving landfill charges as a contribution to the day and Veolia are donating the cost of skip bins and transport to and from event locations.

For those who prefer water based work, the Geraldton Artificial Reef Committee will be hosting the Batavia Coast Marina site and will have volunteers ranging from children to adults walking around the Marina precinct and scuba diving to pick up litter in the water.

With any clean-up event, it is best to wear clothes fit for the activity, it is advised for those on land to wear enclosed shoes, long sleeved clothing, sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30+, hat, water and back pack to contain drink bottles.

Although gloves and litter pickup tools are provided, it is recommended to bring an extra pair of gloves as there may be a shortage and you may encounter some sharp objects whilst cleaning up; if children would also like to take part in the events, it is required to provide them with gloves of the correct size.
