SeaWeek at the Geraldton Museum

The Western Australian Museum – Geraldton will celebrate Seaweek with a range of activities including a special Small Fry session and fish feeding from March 3 to 9.

Seaweek is an annual celebration of the sea, with this year’s theme ‘Sustainable Seas’ focusing on appreciating the diversity of the ocean and how we can contribute to the sustainability of the marine environment.

WA Museum – Geraldton manager Leigh O’Brien said the special Small Fry session on Wednesday March 6 would invite participants aged 0 – 5 and their carers to share in the wonder of the sea through interactive storytelling, song and dance.

“The session will be a fun-filled morning centered on the adventures of a tiny baby turtle as it hatches out of the nest on the beach and begins its life in the ocean and the Leeuwin Current,” Ms O’Brien said.

The Small Fry session will commence at 10am and conclude with feeding the fish in the Museum’s aquarium. 

“The aquarium is very popular with visitors and gives them a chance to observe closely some of the fish and organisms living in the ocean off the Batavia Coast,” Ms O’Brien said.

The Museum will also offer a ‘Sustainable Seas’ education program for school groups, specifically designed for the Mid West.

In the program, students explore the meaning of sustainability and its importance to the local economy, the significance of the Leeuwin Current, threats to our marine environment, and how we can contribute to the sustainability of our seas.

Throughout Seaweek fish feeding sessions will be held at the aquarium twice daily at 11am and 2pm, and will include commentary on the fish and sustainable fishing for aquariums.

Small Fry and the fish feeding sessions are free with no bookings necessary, however, bookings are required for school groups. For further information call the WA Museum – Geraldton on 9921 5080.
