The Perth Wildcats are bringing their Regional Trophy Tour to Geraldton. They will be here from Thursday 30 June until Saturday 2 July.
Players Greg Hire, Jesse Wagstaff, Matt Knight, Shawn Redhage and Corban Wroe plus assistant coach Jamie O’Loughlan will be making the trip to the Midwest.
The group will be bringing with them ALL seven of the club’s championship trophies and will be visiting 11 primary and high schools over the three-day tour.
The Wildcats will also visit the Midnight Basketball where they will meet with young players from the Midwest region.
They will also hold FOUR different coaching clinics with the players, allowing kids of all ages the unique chance to improve their skills and have a lot of fun.
All seven Perth Wildcats Championship Trophies will be on display at each clinic!
Everyone who signs up for a clinic will become a Perth Wildcats member and receive a free gift pack.

Our iconic dunes at the southern entrance to Geraldton are under threat. For those that have not been following this issue there is actually two threats.
One is from a proposal to develop a residential housing estate across the area of the dunes that would see the sand dunes flattened.
The other is from the lime sand extraction operations currently occurring in the north-eastern section on Southgate Road.
While the issues are seemingly separate from each other, they do intersect when it comes to the north-easterly drift of the dunes that would impact on community infrastructure such as roads, drains and culverts, but also on houses as well. The original intent of the land development was primarily to halt this slow northern migration of the dunes.
The potential land development has been a threat for some considerable time now but hasn’t been realised due to the inability of the developers to get agreement from a number of government Departments, including Environmental Regulation, Planning and Transport. The Department of Lands (DoL) is also in the mix now because the developers have failed to commence the development, which required a land swap agreement with DoL for it to occur, in the original timeframe. This agreement was extended a number of times but I believe that it has since expired in 2014.
Back in 2009 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not agree to the development for environmental reasons that highlighted the significant impact on coastal erosion that would likely occur to beaches north of the development. It now appears that the Department of Environmental Regulation (DER) has seen fit to allow this to occur, regardless of the quite sensible view of the EPA.
The CGG has also refused to accept the recommendations from the Minister for Environment due to the poorly understood Aboriginal heritage in the area and the significant effect that any development will have on coastal erosion to the north. The CGG also refused to accept the requirement that they assume the responsibility for the foreshore dunes after 5 years. Acceptance of any or all of these conditions would most likely come at an enormous cost to the residents and ratepayers of Geraldton.
I fully support the City Councillors and the Mayor in their most recent refusal to accept these recommendations from the Minister for development of the dunes.
The lime sand extraction that occurs in the northern portion of the dunes is beneficial in that it actually removes the need for any land development over the dunes. Lime sand extraction operations remove the sand that would otherwise impact the public infrastructure at risk if nothing was done.
The threat here comes from the behaviour of the operator of the lime sand extraction business which is threatening the farming community that uses lime sand to increase their productivity. In breach of the permit and the boundary of the area in which lime sand can be taken, the operator has seen fit to flatten all of the fore-dune area right up to the water line. This must be considered as environmental vandalism at its worst and surely cannot go unpunished.
Any further lime sand extraction must be done in a responsible manner by an operator who is ready to observe all of the environmental and moral requirements.
This behaviour has also put at risk the ability for our Midwest farming industry to utilise this resource in a sustainable manner. This would also benefit the City of Greater Geraldton (CGG) by reducing the need to undertake expensive removal of the sand as it slowly migrated northeast.
But the CGG also has an obligation to ensure that this area is protected from over-exploitation and manage the dunes far better than it has previously.
The petition that I tabled in Parliament on behalf of the community will also bear fruit by allowing the community access to the public responses by the Ministers for Environment, Planning and Lands as part of the enquiry undertaken by the Environment and Public Affairs Committee.
Conversations that I have had with many people across Geraldton have also included their desire to have an entry statement for visitors to our wonderful City, but I’ve always thought that we had one already. There is nothing better than coming north on Brand Hwy, up over the hill to look across the Southgate dunes with the back beach, silos and Point Moore lighthouse in the background welcoming everyone.
Let’s all make sure that the dunes are protected from any future development and are kept as a recreational area for everyone for generations to come.

Geraldton pensioners will continue to benefit from the Country Age Pension Fuel Card thanks to a further investment of $140.1 million over the next four years through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
Nationals WA Member of Parliament and candidate for the seat of Geraldton, Paul Brown MP said the investment, announced in the 2016-17 State budget last week, will help regional pensioners to remain mobile and independent by supporting access to different transport options.
“The Country Age Pension Fuel Card plays an important role in assisting regional pensioners, including age pensioners and people with disabilities, to remain independent through the purchase of fuel and taxi services,” Mr Brown said.
“The regional community does not have access to the same level of public transport as metropolitan areas and the fuel card enables recipients to travel to medical appointments, get along to community events and recreational activities, and visit family and friends more easily.
“Many regional residents have long distances to travel to access medical and health services and I’m proud that Royalties for Regions is assisting pensioners with these travel costs.”
Existing cardholders will automatically be issued a new card in July, provided they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
To be eligible for a fuel card, applicants must live in an eligible regional location in WA and receive a Centrelink Age Pension, Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Wife Pension or Widow B Pension, or a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Service Pension, Social Security Age pension or Income Support Supplement.
Since 2008, the State Government through the Royalties for Regions program has invested a total of $158 million to fund the Country Age Pension Fuel Card Scheme.
The value loaded onto the Country Age Pension Fuel Card will increase from $565 to $575 from 1 July 2016.
The State Government will invest $3.78 billion over the next four years to build vibrant regions with strong economies through Royalties for Regions initiatives in health, community services, education, arts, Aboriginal development initiatives, agriculture, tourism and economic development.

Robert and Margaret Gaston started collecting tins in 2005 and then opened Tin Heads in 2009 for the public to see their huge collection, which continues to grow.
What started out as a small hobby has turned into the biggest collections of tins in Australia. Robert and Margaret now have over 8500 tins, with every kind of tin you can think of.
They are open every second Sunday of each month or by appointment. The cost to see this amazing collection is just a gold coin donation to the Heart Foundation. They are located at 80 Beattie Road, Waggrakine.
Tin Heads are members of the Geraldton Visitor Centre and have tours going through all year round.
One tour that went through recently was Gallivanting Oz, who are a Motorhome and Campervan Hire company, and will travel around with you if you aren’t comfortable going out on your own.
When Gallivanting Oz were recently travelling with 5 couples in 5 vans, they came through Geraldton and when looking for things to do they found Tin Heads and had to have a look at this huge collection to believe it for themselves. And they weren’t disappointed, and said they would be back with future tours.

Expressions of Interest - West End Precinct Café Lease
The City of Greater Geraldton is seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced restaurant and café operators interested in the opportunity to lease the café premises in the Foreshore West locality currently known as the Sail Inn Café. This landmark café was refurbished in 2014 by the City and lies adjacent to the iconic Old Railway Building, the newly completed Youth Precinct and Multi User Facility.

The City of Greater Geraldton is looking for artists and groups to create artworks, as well as property owners who can create or display artworks.
With $5000 worth of prizes on offer, those with an artistic flair are being called on to take part in ArtDrive, a project that aims to create a drive by rural art tour.
The ArtDrive self-drive tour will take people from Geraldton will following the Brand Highway through Greenough then Walkaway, onto Ellendale, through to Mullewa and then returning to Geraldton.
The project is designed to attract tourists to the region during wildflower season and encourage them to extend their stay.
