The Midwest Pet Fair is back!

Geraldton Dog Rescue’s major annual fundraiser, the Midwest Pet Fair, will be back in Geraldton on Sunday 29 March 2015.

Local event coordination business Its All Sorted are excited about hosting the event again, along with the major sponsors of their 2015 Community Events The Abrolhos Group & Dr Kim Pedlow. The team are looking forward to trying out the new venue. “We have shifted to the St Francis Xavier Primary School oval this year, a huge thank you to them for letting us borrow their grounds!” says Managing Director Emma Howell.

2015 will be the third year of the Pet Fair, which usually brings in $4000 $5000 for Geraldton Dog Rescue (GDR), to go toward rehoming the beautiful dogs which find their way to GDR’s
foster homes. This is raised from the $5 entry fee paid by the local community who attend, plus GDR running sausage sizzles and selling merchandise.

“There will be some exciting things to see and do at the Pet Fair this year,” says Emma. “We’ve got the Old McDonald’s Animal Farm joining us to provide a petting zoo, plus Phil from Paint Storm will be painting up a storm throughout the event! Then as usual, we’ll have agility displays from the Kennel Club, a range of local animal oriented businesses on display and some local markets too!” says Emma.

GDR have been finding forever homes and families for dogs who for some reason or another don’t have one. Run on 100% volunteer love, they rehome a dog per day on average, and it just keeps building.

“To make sure this event is as successful as usual, we need the community to get behind it. We want more businesses (animal oriented but also general market stalls) to get involved and hold a stall at the event it’s just $55. And we want more people to come down on the day and have some fun with us! Bring your friends and family, and support your community.”

The 2015 Midwest Pet Fair will be at the St Francis Xavier Primary School oval from 10am 1pm on Sunday 29 March. $5 entry, children under 10 free. For more information www.itsallsorted.com.au 0458 271 853 or admin@itsallsorted.com.au

Heat stroke in pets

What you need to know about heat stroke in pets:

It’s natural for Australians to love summer and we want to soak up every bit of sun we can before the season ends. Although summer is nearing an end, the weather hasn’t cooled down yet and we want to spend every moment with our fury friends by our sides. But it comes at a price sadly, as many pets are subject to heat stroke where many cases can easily be prevented with proper precaution.

What is it? Heat stroke occurs when an animal has been overexposed to high temperatures for a prolonged period of time, which can lead of organ failure if not treated promptly. Even if your pet has been exposed for only 10 minutes can lead to a state of extreme hyperthermia and severe internal damage. Dogs and cats don’t sweat like humans do and rely only on the pads on their paws and their nose. They are able to control their temperature by panting and increasing their breathing rate. This technique IS successful, but only to a certain extend and when temperatures are exceeded is when animals are not able to cool themselves off as quickly as they are heating up.

Warning Signs: The key warning signs of heat stroke in your pet is excessive panting and difficulty breathing. This especially applies for dogs, which tend to develop thick mucus in the back of their throat when exposed to high temperatures. Snorting and/or trying to cough may be a warning sign of heat stroke. Other warning signs are an increased heat rate, blue/purple gums, fatigue, muscle spasms, excessive drooling, confusion and vomiting.

How to prevent heatstroke:
Do NOT leave your pet in a vehicle, even if the weather is moderately cool outside. The inside temperature of a car can rise from 22 degrees to 47 degrees in as little as an hour and the pet will not be able to cool itself down.

Always keep fresh, cool water nearby. Staying hydrated is extremely important in preventing heat stroke on those hot summer days.

If it’s hot outside, it is encouraged to keep your pets indoors where it is cool. However, if this is not possible, make sure that there is plenty of shade for them to rest under and do not over exercise them.

What to do: If you are unsure if your pet is developing heat stroke, don’t wait and see if the symptoms progress. The best thing you want is just a false alarm and even if you think they’re panting more than usual, take them to a vet straight away. There are first aid techniques you can use on the way to the vet which include keeping a cold, wet flannel on your pets body (not ice cold, though), encouraging to drink water at every opportunity and turning the air conditioner up full blast in the car. This gives your pet the best chance of survival.

If you think your pet is developing heatstroke, visit your vet straight away. Midwest Vets can provide your pet with the care it needs. They are located at 117 Cathedral Avenue and are open Monday – Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and are open till 7:00pm on Thursdays. They are open Saturday from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

Phone (08) 9964 3671 or after hours on 0407 471 933 if it’s an emergency.

An 84 year old fish – amazing!

In the wake of researchers discovering WA’s most long-lived fish Geraldton MLA Ian Blayney has urged local recreational fishers to take on their South Coast brethren and help Department of Fisheries researchers determine the age of fish species in the Indian Ocean’s West Coast.

The discovery by WA researchers of a Bight redfish that lived to 84 years of agehas set a new State record for long-lived fish.

Bight Redfish

The ‘elderly’ Bight Redfish was swimming in the ocean early last century and still alive and cruising WA’s South Coast late last year.

This redfish was born in 1929 when the Popeye comic was making its debut and the Academy Awards first started. It was swimming around when Philip Collier was WA’s Premier and James Scullin took over from Stanley Bruce as Australia’s Prime Minister, when WA celebrated its centenary and during the Great Depression.

The 60cm Bight redfish (Centroberyxgerrardi) was about average size when it was caught in November 2013.

Now you might wonder how do you tell the age of a fish?

Mr Blayney said “it’s not possible to tell the age of a fish from looking at it. So its age wasn’t discovered until its skeleton went under the microscope at the Department of Fisheries’ Hillarys research centre”.

Researchers from the Department of Fisheries, working in collaboration with Murdoch University’s Centre for Fish and Fisheries Research, assessed the age of this female fish from examining the growth rings of its ear bones (or otoliths), much like the way that tree ages can be identified from a cross-section of trunk.

The research was being supported by recreational fishers and commercial fish processors on the South Coast, who have been donating fish frames of the required species with skeleton and head left intact after filleting.

Otolith of 84yr-old Bight redfish

Bight redfish is one of the key species being checked. Geraldton and Mid West fishers to the 27-degree parallel just north of Kalbarri can contribute to the project which is also looking at pink snapper, blue morwong and donated frames of three near shore finfish species; Australian herring, King George whiting and tailor.

Recreational fishers can play a key part in the research by donating their fish skeletons to help long-term monitoring of fish stocks.

Also known as 'frames', filleted skeletons, with the heads and guts intact, are essential to assess the status of fish resources. By analysing data from the frames reseachers can make science-based decisions to sustainably manage our fisheries.

By donating frames before July 1, recreational fishers can win a number of prizes thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

Prizes for this year include:

  • A charter trip for two to the Montebello Islands with Monte Bello Island Safaris and return flights from Perth to Exmouth are provided by the WA Department of Fisheries.
  • State-of-the-art custom-made fishing rods andUgly Stik fishing rods.
  • A day's charter fishing trip for two from Hillarys.
  • Quarterly $50 vouchers and other assorted prizes..

Dhufish

To donate frames, label them with your name and address (so they can send you research feedback and enter you into our prize draw - see below), the date and location of your capture (shore catch: general location; boat catch: latitude/longitude or distance and bearing from port and the name of the port). Information you provide about the location of your catch is confidential and only used for research purposes, so you can continue to keep your favourite fishing spots secret.

Fishers can drop off their fish frames at our offices or participating stores listed below. The frames can be frozen, so you can collect a few before dropping them off.

Shark Alert

Sent in: Just wanted to put a warning out to people. Hubby just got back from pulling his pots.

Whilst out there in front of Mitchell and brown, had a HUGE shark come up to dingy. Our dingy is 14ft and the shark was as long as it easy, didn't have any way of taking video, worst luck.

Yes yes , it's the ocean and of course there's sharks and all that ridicule that people will come back with, but this was huge and I would rather put a warning out just in case. - Dannielle

Video: Sharks circling cray pots

Sent in to Everything Geraldton:

"Hubby shot this video this morning when pulling pots. Just amateurs, hadn't even thrown any bait over the side either, the sharks just came swirling up with the pot as it was being winched up. The longest was about 8ft. Hubby said they don't normally do that and they seemed very hungry and angry today, and more so when the old bait was tossed overboard. He said he was glad he was safe in the boat."

Vicious dog attack leads to City Animal Control Team asking for help

Vicious dog attack leads to City Animal Control Team asking for help

City of Greater Geraldton Rangers have been investigating a dog attack where a much loved family dog was attacked on its owner’s porch.

Two dogs came onto a property on Kenny Cresent, Rangeway at approximately 4.20am on November 28, where they attacked the dog causing multiple injuries resulting in urgent veterinary treatment.

Rangers believe the larger white dog is a Bull Arab and the smaller brindle dog with white legs is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffy).

The City is reminding dog owners they have the responsibility to ensure the safety of not only their own dog, but other dogs and people too.

Dog attacks are a serious matter and owners are held responsible for the actions of their pet. A dog attack includes a dog aggressively rushing or attempting to attack a person or animal, as well as tearing clothing, biting or causing physical injury.

In some cases the court may order the dog to be destroyed.

Responsible ownership includes:

  •  Ensuring the animal is wearing a collar displaying owners name, address and Council registration tag attached when in public places
  • Pet must be confined to the premises where it lives at all times
  • Is held by a competent person capable of controlling a dog when in public
  • In designated areas, dogs may be exercised off leash, however the person in control of the dog must carry a leash and restrain the dog when required
  • Dog must be registered and micro-chipped in a person’s name over the age of 18 years
  • Dangerous dogs must be declared.

Penalties for dog attacks can vary from $200 to $20,000 or potential imprisonment depending on the severity of the case.

If anyone can identify the two dogs or their owners, the City is urging them to please notify the Council as soon as possible on (08) 9956 6600.

Hounds Hilton are very much open for business

Hounds Hilton is a dog boarding kennel located in South Greenough and run by Todd and Bernadette.

If you're wanting to reach them you can ring 9926 1194

Everything Geraldton had a chat with them today as there were some rumours going around on social media that they had closed their doors.

"That's definitely not the case," Todd tells us.  "We're very much open for business."

This is the busiest time of year for Hounds Hilton, and although they're booked over Christmas, they say they have bookings available from Jan 5 2015.

It's actually quite affordable to have your dog cared for by Hounds Hilton. Depending on the size of your dog you'll pay around $17 to $20 a day.

And that includes food! And of course the dogs get exercised.

Todd and Bernadette have been running their business for 12 years now. Todd says it's a great lifestyle business for a family with young kids.

Mid West Cat Shelter Mending Hearts

CORAL's STORY - "I lost my babies"

When MWCS rescued Coral she was riddled with worms and so skinny you could see every bone on her tiny body. Before MWCS met Coral she was heavily pregnant. Unfortunately she was so malnourished that she soon miscarried the litter of kittens she was carrying.

Coral's first few weeks in foster care were very quiet and sad. She would only leave her bed to snuggle on her foster carer's lap, gripping tightly to her foster carer's arms. Coral never wanted to roam the house and was not interested in playing. Her foster carers were worried and tried introducing her to other cats unsuccessfully.

Things only improved slightly for Coral, and she was soon grumpy with the other adult cats.

However a new addition to the foster family changed everything! ....

ANA's STORY  - "I've never known my mum"

Ana and her litter mates were found alone and hungry, only one week old! They were so tiny they could easily fit in the palm of your hand. The kittens were monitored closely to see if mum would return, but she never did.

Rangers were worried for the kittens' welfare and called MWCS in to help.

A dedicated foster carer spent many hours hand-raising the kittens, tending to their every need just like their mum would have done.

Ana's litter mates grew into confident, independent kittens. However Ana always stayed close to her foster carer, seeking attention.

At 8 weeks old the kittens were socialized with a new foster carer. It was here that her carer's realized Ana was showing signs of the behavioural problem 'pica'. Pica is a potentially dangerous condition that causes the kitten to chew and eat foreign objects like wool. It is most common in hand raised kittens, and can be reduced by socializing with adult cats.

Ana still had the company of her sister and one adult cat, but Ana's condition didn't seem to be improving. Her foster carer was worried.

But then Coral joined the foster family...

CORAL ADORES ANA!!! - "A new relationship mends two broken hearts"

Coral and Ana are never far from each other. Ana seeks out Coral whenever she can, spending more time with Coral than her own sister!

Coral and Ana are often found snuggled together, or grooming each other. Ana’s pica problem has now resolved and Corals lonely days are a thing of the past!!

These two have developed a strong bond in foster care and MWCS would love to see them find a forever home together.

Two broken hearts mended by each other, patiently waiting for their forever home. If you are interested in adopting Coral and Ana, they will be available for a bonded-pair discounted price of $250. Please call 0487 193 244 to speak with our coordinator about adopting these two wonderful girls today!
