Geraldton Iron Ore Alliance sponsor this year's Mid West Economic and Resources Summit

ALLIANCE COMMITMENT TO MID WEST DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES

Continuing their longstanding support of the Mid West Economic and Resources Summit, the Geraldton Iron Ore Alliance (GIOA) have confirmed their partnership for the 2014 event, Blueprints for a Brighter Future.

The annual Summit is being hosted for the fifth time as an initiative of the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MWCCI). The region’s vital conference and cocktail function will provide industry professionals with progressive discussions and authoritative speakers addressing current issues on the economic outlook, and the industries, that drive the Mid West region.

Featuring high calibre speakers from the financial, resources and government sectors coupled with essential networking opportunities the event is expected to attract up to 300 delegates.

In addition to the guest speakers featured in each session, there will also be a number of highly informative panel discussions throughout the event, giving delegates the opportunity to observe a variety of viewpoints from industry experts.

MWCCI president Mr Trevor Lake says this event gives local business people exclusive opportunities to engage with, and take advantage of, future opportunities.

“This year’s Summit theme of Blueprints for a Brighter Future focusses on the principles of resilience, sustainability, diversification, conservation, innovation, competitiveness and development of sustainable communities”.

“We are delighted that the Geraldton Iron Ore Alliance have confirmed their ongoing partnership with our business community’s premier event.”

In addition to the GIOA, there are a number of organisations coming on board as sponsors of the Summit including the Mid West Development Commission, City of Greater Geraldton and the Department of Agriculture and Food with a limited number of sponsorship opportunities still available.

The sponsorship prospectus is available to download from the event website at www.mwers.com.au

Blueprints for a Brighter Future will be held on the 23rd September at the Queens Park Theatre, Geraldton.

City staff get set to tread the boards for Foodbank

Concert cast BB levels Think City of Greater Geraldton Council staff are boring pencil pushers with no personality?

Boy, are you in for a pleasant surprise on July 26 when City staff present a variety benefit concert to raise funds for Foodbank Geraldton, at 7pm at Queens Park Theatre.

Some amazing talent lurks amongst City staff who will entertain with music and comedy in the With a Little Help From Our Friends concert, so named to promote the idea of people helping others in need, and of course recognising help from well- known friends outside the City who will support the cast on stage.

Leading the friends will be Geraldton’s own very talented Mia Royce along with Aaron Willcox wielding some guitar magic.

City Mayor, Ian Carpenter said this voluntary initiative from City staff and friends shows great community spirit to raise funds for Foodbank. “Staff from across the organisation are volunteering their time, talent and effort, at no cost to the City, we are simply providing QPT as the venue. They are doing all the arranging and rehearsals in their own time,” he said.

“It will be an enjoyable night and City Councillors encourage the community to get into the spirit of the concert and support this great cause.”

City CEO, Ken Diehm, said it is wonderful to see the musical talents of City staff in a charity concert for Foodbank.

“All too often, we focus on our work, and it’s important to note that people have lives outside of work and people who are less fortunate require our support,” he said.

“It never ceases to amaze me the width and breadth of talent of our staff and I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy a fun evening of entertainment to help Foodbank. The generosity of City staff is to be congratulated – and it’s all for a good cause. Helping those in Geraldton who do not have the same opportunities as many of us do.”

The concert has received support from the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry - long supporters of Foodbank and local charities - with promotion to its members, and CBD Chamber members are separately holding a combined food and blankets donation day for Foodbank and the Salvation Army in the CBD on July 5.

With support from city centre traders, flyers for the With a Little Help From Our Friends City concert will be distributed to the public at that event.

In addition to concert box office proceeds being donated to Foodbank, food donation bins will be available in the QPT foyer on concert night. A feature of the night, to boost the fund raising effort, will be the auction of a beautiful Abrolhos pearl pendant, designed and crafted especially for the concert and generously donated by Chimere Pearls. Tickets for the concert are available from the Queens Park Theatre 9956 6662, the Civic Centre, 63 Cathedral Avenue, Geraldton, or online at www.queensparktheatre.com.au

13 Comedians in one huge night

july2014 lineup graphic

Tickets available from www.queensparktheatre.com.au

We all know the song - “I’m a bloke, I’m a yobbo and me best mate’s name is Robbo…” Guess what? The artist who brought us the ARIA winning “Bloke” - parody of Meredith Brooke’s hit “Bitch” - Chris Franklin is headlining The Comedy Emporium’s next show on Friday 11th July with 13 other comedians!

Look out for this show that is packed full of acts, with returning MC Xavier Susai, plus WA Raw Comedy winner Matt Storer (ABC2) and international comedian Alan Chisholm! Not to mention a lineup of everyone’s favourite local comedians.

“We’ve got 13 performers in total, and pre-booked tickets are just $25...” explained The Comedy Emporium Coordinator Emma Howell “That means, it’s $1.92307692 per performer! Unless you don’t pre-book your tickets… Then its over $2.30 - Grab a bargain while you can.”

There are still tickets on sale for this stellar lineup, and after selling out and having to turn people away, The Comedy Emporium are encouraging everyone to get their tickets early. Local comedian Lachlan Adam agrees, “We always have at least 200 people turn up for a nice night of fun - that’s the most people I’ve ever seen together in Geraldton without having a fight!” There’s less than two weeks to go until this show, and The Comedy Emporium won’t be having their usual September Comedy show - so don’t muck around or you will miss out.

As well as the huge number of performers, the comedians will be trialling something new for the July Show - it turns out ATC Midwest like happiness as much as The Comedy Emporium do! They will be partnering with The Comedy Emporium to help deliver the free workshop program which has seen the success of a dozen local comedians make their debut. “Watching people embarrassing themselves on purpose, is so much better than by accident” says local comedian in training Stacey, about The Comedy Emporium’s entertainment value.

The Comedy Emporium, Friday 11 July at the Queens Park Theater. Doors open 6.30pm, live music from Anne Williams 7.15pm, comedy from 8pm

For more information head to www.thecomedyemporium.com or www.queensparktheatre.com.au

Tickets on sale now for $25 each presale. Tickets at the door for $30 if not sold out (the last 3 shows have sold out) – so make sure you pre book through the Queens Park Theatre. Group discounts apply and for enquiries please ring 0458 306 111. No BYO alcohol. Bar available.

A very cool Da Vinci experience at our museum

Experience Leonardo da Vinci’s genius first-hand when da Vinci Machines opens at the Western Australian Museum – Geraldton this Saturday 5 July. This exciting exhibition features 60 of his visionary inventions in the areas of flying machines, nautical innovations, and machines of war, alongside 15 beautifully crafted replicas of famous da Vinci artworks.

Regional Manager of WA Museum – Geraldton Leigh O’Brien said this exhibition is unlike anything the Geraldton community had seen before, showcasing the breadth of Leonardo da Vinci’s extraordinary talent in an interesting and interactive way.

“Our visitors won’t just get a glimpse of da Vinci’s brilliance; they will be able to explore the whole creative process of building these machines,” Ms O’Brien said.

Some of the exhibits include a revolutionary underwater breathing apparatus; a concept for a helicopter made of reeds, linen, and iron thread; and plans for an armoured vehicle made from wood – potentially the world’s first military tank.

image002

“The display places da Vinci’s Codices or concept drawings alongside real models of his machines, created by modern day artisans who, true to da Vinci’s ideas, used only materials of da Vinci’s day in construction.  Many of the exhibits are interactive, allowing visitors to feel and operate completed machines.”

Some of the exhibits include a revolutionary underwater breathing apparatus; a concept for a helicopter made of reeds, linen, and iron thread; and plans for an armoured vehicle made from wood – potentially the world’s first military tank.  Testament to da Vinci’s brilliance and forethought is the fact that the mechanical theory behind these ideas generated in the 15th Century is still relevant in the 21st Century.

Da Vinci Machines will feature at the WA Museum – Geraldton from 5 July to 19 October.  Tickets can be purchased from the Western Australian Museum – Geraldton or on the website at www.museum.wa.gov.au.

The da Vinci Machines exhibition is presented by Niccolai – Teknoart SNC and the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci, Florence.

Keep an eye on the Geraldton Events Calendar on our website or app for latest museum features.

Geraldton's intriguing new dance group - No Lights, No Lycra

You arrive at the hall, wearing something comfy (you're gonna get sweaty!). Bring some water and $5. Find yourself a spot, wait for the lights to go out and shake what your mumma gave ya. That's it!

17967424_nlnl_1

Originating in Melbourne and now found all over the world, No Lights No Lycra is coming to Geraldton! No lights, no lycra, no teacher, no steps to learn, no technique, just free movement. NLNL is for the lounge room dancers, microphone (hairbrush) wielders, and bedroom mirror booty shakers - It's daggy, it's ridiculous and it's a hilariously good time!

Everything Geraldton spoke with Bonnie who is helping organise the NLNL in Geraldton.

She said 20 people were there for the first NLNL in Geraldton last Friday, including a couple of kids. Anyone's welcome, male and female. And kids are free.

"It's not quite pitch black, you can just make out an outline of other people, but it's dark enough so it's not embarrassing for anyone."

So what does a typical NLNL session look like?

You arrive at the hall, wearing something comfy (you're gonna get sweaty!). Bring some water and $5. Find yourself a spot, wait for the lights to go out and shake what your mumma gave ya. That's it!

We don't care what you look like and we don't care how you move, we don't even care if you can keep a beat. EVERYONE has the moves within them and its all about how you feel! Nobody's watching, so come and shake away the week with us.

You can find out more about NLNL at http://nolightsnolycra.com/the-nlnl-story/ If you're still feeling confused, just head along and give it a go!

07:00 PM each Friday currently at 21 Urch St - All Things Dance studio, thought the venue may change in the future. Keep an eye on the Everything Geraldton events calendar for info.
