Major Telstra outages around town

If your phone and internet has died recently, you're not alone. Several Everything Geraldton readers have reached out to us saying they have been without phone and internet since at least Friday.

We asked the community on Facebook if they were without Telstra services. Click here to read the many responses.

Retailers from Northgate shopping centre say they were without phone and EFTPOS on Saturday, frustrating many shoppers.

Some residents have said they were informed by Telstra the issues would be fixed by the 13th of this month.

We have reached out to Telstra for comment and will update this if they respond.

Update:

Telstra Area General Manager Tony Carmichael responded:

The damage to the main cable was caused by a third party and repairs were in progress when the severe storms struck on March 1.

Telstra landline and ADSL services in and around Geraldton were affected when the damaged cables that were being repaired were impacted by water damage caused by flooding.

We have technicians on-site repairing the cables and services are being restored gradually. Of the 1122 services impacted, many are already back online and we are doing everything we can to restore the remaining services as quickly as possible.

We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience during this period.

Heat stroke in pets

What you need to know about heat stroke in pets:

It’s natural for Australians to love summer and we want to soak up every bit of sun we can before the season ends. Although summer is nearing an end, the weather hasn’t cooled down yet and we want to spend every moment with our fury friends by our sides. But it comes at a price sadly, as many pets are subject to heat stroke where many cases can easily be prevented with proper precaution.

What is it? Heat stroke occurs when an animal has been overexposed to high temperatures for a prolonged period of time, which can lead of organ failure if not treated promptly. Even if your pet has been exposed for only 10 minutes can lead to a state of extreme hyperthermia and severe internal damage. Dogs and cats don’t sweat like humans do and rely only on the pads on their paws and their nose. They are able to control their temperature by panting and increasing their breathing rate. This technique IS successful, but only to a certain extend and when temperatures are exceeded is when animals are not able to cool themselves off as quickly as they are heating up.

Warning Signs: The key warning signs of heat stroke in your pet is excessive panting and difficulty breathing. This especially applies for dogs, which tend to develop thick mucus in the back of their throat when exposed to high temperatures. Snorting and/or trying to cough may be a warning sign of heat stroke. Other warning signs are an increased heat rate, blue/purple gums, fatigue, muscle spasms, excessive drooling, confusion and vomiting.

How to prevent heatstroke:
Do NOT leave your pet in a vehicle, even if the weather is moderately cool outside. The inside temperature of a car can rise from 22 degrees to 47 degrees in as little as an hour and the pet will not be able to cool itself down.

Always keep fresh, cool water nearby. Staying hydrated is extremely important in preventing heat stroke on those hot summer days.

If it’s hot outside, it is encouraged to keep your pets indoors where it is cool. However, if this is not possible, make sure that there is plenty of shade for them to rest under and do not over exercise them.

What to do: If you are unsure if your pet is developing heat stroke, don’t wait and see if the symptoms progress. The best thing you want is just a false alarm and even if you think they’re panting more than usual, take them to a vet straight away. There are first aid techniques you can use on the way to the vet which include keeping a cold, wet flannel on your pets body (not ice cold, though), encouraging to drink water at every opportunity and turning the air conditioner up full blast in the car. This gives your pet the best chance of survival.

If you think your pet is developing heatstroke, visit your vet straight away. Midwest Vets can provide your pet with the care it needs. They are located at 117 Cathedral Avenue and are open Monday – Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and are open till 7:00pm on Thursdays. They are open Saturday from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

Phone (08) 9964 3671 or after hours on 0407 471 933 if it’s an emergency.

How to get Help with your Bookkeeping

When running a business, there’s nothing more stressful than falling behind in paper work and having a million other things to do. It’s even worse when you’ve fallen behind in so much paper work that you have no idea what’s actually going on in your own business, especially finances. Let’s face it, everyone’s not perfect. It’s extremely difficult for an individual to run a business and spend their limited time keeping track of accounts, keeping books organised and keeping clients happy when your job is to actually run the business.

We spoke with Pamela Weston who is the owner of Pam Weston’s Bookkeeping who has shared with us what bookkeeping is and how it can benefit your business. Pamela says, “Bookkeeping in a nutshell, is the accounts side of a business who keep track of finances and ensure that everything is running smoothly and as it should”. Bookkeeping saves you time, stress and in some cases money. Pamela tells us how:

Bookkeeping helps keep a business on track by regularly updating and keeping accounts books organised and reconciled. This makes it easier for accountants when generating annual reports and financial statements. An unorganised file will cost the accountant more time, and therefore, you more money.

Recording transactions and keeping track of finances gives you, the business owner, a better understanding of what is going on inside your business and where money is being spent. This will also give you a better understanding of your financial position and you can then focus on what areas need improvement and what strategies appear to be working. Setting goals is extremely important when running a business because it keeps everyone on track and it gives you the opportunity to improve your business by developing strategies to increase revenue. If that goal hasn’t been met in a set period, then it’s obvious that something is wrong and isn’t working. By addressing the problem sooner rather than later can save you a lot of time and money.

You may not require a bookkeeper on a daily basis, which is expected if you’re running a small business. However, when mistakes have been made, bookkeepers are here to provide you with ongoing support and to help rectify what errors have been made before the problem progresses into something catastrophic. Everyone makes mistakes, however, not everyone may know how to fix it correctly. If a mistake has been made, don’t try to fix it yourself if you don’t know what you’re doing and let the bookkeeper do it for you.

If you run a business and need assistance with the accounts side of it, phone Pam Weston’s Bookkeeping and see how she can help your business. Pam Weston’s Bookkeeping is open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and is closed weekends.

Benefits of Pole Dancing

Any form of exercise is good for your body, whether it’s cardio, swimming, weights or even yoga. But did you know the benefits of pole dancing and what it can do for your body? We spoke with Julie from Everybody Group Fitness who are the only studio in Geraldton that do pole dancing classes and has shared with us the benefits of it.

1.)  Increases your core and upper body strength:
Pole dancing requires large amounts of strength and endurance to support your body when performing intense moves. The combination of abdominal contractions and relying on the strength of your arms to support your body is a fantastic way of strengthening your core and upper body, which is exactly what pole dancing can do.

2.)  It is a fantastic way to boost your confidence:
Pole dancing isn’t all about the fitness. It’s also about the fun aspect of it. Being able to perform tasks that you once thought not possible is a great way to feel good about yourself and boost your confidence. Being more strong and flexible will also make you healthier and feel happier.

3.) Increases flexibility:
Certain movements of pole dancing require total muscle relaxation, which is an ideal way of increasing flexibility. Flexibility allows your body to move in the direction that you want it to go in. A wide range of movements in pole dancing require flexibility, so consistent practice and going to classes regularly will increase your body’s ability to move.

4.)  Great way to release stress:
If done correctly, any exercise will release endorphins into your system (the feel good hormone), which will make you feel great about yourself and get rid of any stress you may be carrying on your shoulders.

On February 9th, Julie introduced Pole Fit, a class specifically for pole dancing that takes place during the following times:

Monday: 5:45pm & 7:00pm
Tuesday: 10:30am, 11:45am, 5:45pm & 7:00pm
Thursday: 10:30am & 11:45am
Friday: 5:45pm & 7:00pm

See their website for more information.

How to remove a stain from your carpet

There’s nothing worse than staining your gorgeous carpet and scrubbing it for hours on end and having no luck. Whether it’s wine, food, mud, chewing gum, ink or lipstick; we’ve all been there, and I’m sure you all know the hassle with removing those unsightly stains.

We spoke with David Tandy from Geraldton Carpet Doctor, who started his business back in the UK in 2002 before coming to Australia in 2007. David has seen everything from red wine stains to texta marks and everything else in between. David gives advice on the two most popular questions he gets asked and some handy tips:

Rule number one: NEVER scrub. Always blot, no matter what the stain. Scrubbing vigorously may seem like the thing to do, but it actually forces the stain deeper into the carpets fibers and makes it larger.

1. General Dirt Marks – using a high street brand carpet powder, use a soft bristle brush and immediately brush the carpet powder thoroughly into the carpet. Wait at least 20 minutes for the powder to dry and then vacuum the whole carpet thoroughly.

2. Dog & Cat Urine – absorb as much of the moisture as possible with paper towels immediately after the mess has been made. Discard the used paper towels afterwards and repeat until no more moisture can be absorbed. Apply a handful of baking soda to the affected area and once completely dry, vacuum it up. The baking soda will absorb the odour and urine, which left untreated, can linger for months.

If you don’t have the time to try these ideas, or they have not worked for whatever reason, let David do it for you. David believes that everybody should have fresh looking carpets without paying hundreds of dollars for it. David uses an American made water extractor machine that injects clean solution into the carpet and retrieves the dirt and stains, making your carpets look brand new.

“Pay Perth prices living in Geraldton”, where you can get a standard FULL room clean and shampoo for only $29 and an all over sofa clean from $50. They say that quality comes with price, but not for David’s business. As one of his many satisfied customers, I was amazed with the results he achieved in one sitting and couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

Geraldton Carpet Doctor are open Monday – Sunday from 7:00am to 7:00pm

How to get the best lawn in the neighbourhood?

Lets face it, not all of us can be Jason Hodges when it comes to caring for our garden, yet we still want to have the best garden and lawn in the neighbourhood. Well, if you’re like me and don’t know the different between fertiliser and roundup, there IS light at the end of the tunnel, because Doug Brown from Geraldton Turf Farm is here to turn your dream garden into a reality.

Landscape Design: If you’ve just bought a block and are starting to plan out what parts of your future garden go where, you need to ask yourself a couple of things. Will my plants get enough sunlight if I build a tall fence close by? Will my plants be protected from those harsh summer winds? Will I be digging close to, or underneath any big water pipes? These are things that you may not have thought of, which may very well have an impact on your garden and your property in the near future.

These are questions that Doug always takes into consideration when designing a garden bed, lawn or even a patio. If you really want to achieve the best results possible, let the Doug take care of everything and deliver to you a sustainable long lasting garden that you can enjoy for years to come.

Finest Quality Turf: At Geraldton Turf Farm, they grow the finest quality turf because it is grown locally here in Geraldton. This means that their turf has already pre-adapted to the harsh Geraldton climate making them tougher and stronger which ultimately benefits you. So give your lawn the best chance at life by using the finest quality and locally grown turf that Doug can supply and install at your earliest convenience.

Reticulation: Geraldton Turf Farm use water-wise automatic reticulation systems that are efficient, cost effective and most of all, keep your lawn green all year round. From sports ovals to commercial landscapes to small backyards, Doug has it all and “if it’s thirsty, we’ll find a way to give it a drink”. Their reticulation services include lawn mainlines, underground pop up systems, mp rotator sprinkler, green house reticulation, large span reticulation and much more.

Geraldton Turf Farm are open Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 4:00pm.

Huge asset for the region; Geraldton Universities Centre now over 200 students

One of the most disappointing things we witness each year in Geraldton is the talent drain that occurs as many of our best and brightest make their way to the big smoke to attend university. Some return, some don't.

As an employer, it can be challenging at times to find staff who love living in the region and posses the necessary qualifications to carry out the job at hand.

And as parents we want our children to have as many opportunities as possible, as well as the fantastic family friendly lifestyle living in Geraldton affords us. Often in the past we have had to pick one at the expense of the other

But that is starting to change, thanks in no small part to the growth the Geraldton Universities Centre (GUC) has experienced since its launch in 2002.

Back then a humble 20 places were available, but this year GUC will crack the 200 student mark for the first time.

Natalie Nelmes, who is the director at GUC, tells us that the number this year is around 214, up from approx 180 in 2014.

We asked Natalie about the make-up of the students, whether they're people who would have left for Perth, or people would have stayed in Geraldton anyway but just had less options at their disposal.

We were told that it's a strong mix of both.

She said a large portion are school leavers; around a quarter. In the past these students would have had to relocate to Perth, or study externally.

About 20% are students who went to Perth for uni, not liked it, and returned to Geraldton. Without GUC operating, their uni life would have been over, and they would have had to choose other options.

Some have come through TAFE pathways (Durack), and there's also a number of mature age folks, who are quite committed to region. They now have more options when it comes to learning and training.

There are eight courses on offer at GUC at this point in time, and the offerings have been steadily growing. As the courses roll out over the coming years to include second, third and fourth year students in new courses, numbers are expected to continue to grow. New courses get added as industry and student demand becomes apparent. GUC is also looking at the possibility of post graduate courses in the future.

Most Significant about the growth - The Campus Experience

While the growth at GUC is impressive in itself, Natalie Nelmes says the most significant thing about having this many students is that an entire campus experience is starting to blossom, which is very important for students.

Ms Nelmes says: "The students are part of something bigger, part of a real university experience. We now have a student association."

The "social life" aspect of attending university is a big part of the appeal. The University of NSW says that students that have a good social life and a solid on-campus network often find academic work easier to accomplish.

Courses on offer include the Steps Bridging program (alternative Uni entrance course), Education (Early Childhood and Primary Teaching), Nursing, Accounting, Business, Communications, Phycological Science, Social work (first time this year), Engineering (2 year associates degree).

5 things you need to know about looking after your car

If you are like me and rely on your vehicle to take you from A-B, then this article is for you. We spoke with Trevor Evans at Auto Pit Stop Geraldton who has shared with us a bit about his business, services he provides, and handy tips for looking after your pride and joy.

Auto Pit Stop has been in operation since March 2002 where Trevor was previously a Service Manager at Sun City Ford from 1987. With over 30 years of experience in the auto mechanic industry, Trevor can provide you with no nonsense advice about any issues your vehicle may have and repair it in a timely manner.

Auto Pit Stop are proud to say they provide all services for all makes of cars and if it can’t be fixed, you will be referred to someone who can. If you require any parts or accessories that aren’t in stock, it will be ordered that day so you’re back on the road as soon as possible with the job done right.

What tips and advice do you have for owners when looking after their cars?

  1. Fuel: Try to avoid your fuel reaching below a quarter of a tank. Trevor explains that your petrol inside your tank cools the electrical fuel pump. Therefore, if your fuel tank is close to empty, your fuel pump will overheat and may need replacing is damaged.
  2. Brakes: If you start to hear a squeak or feel a vibration, it’s a warning sign that your brake pads need replacing, which is an immediate requirement as it is a safety hazard.
  3. Holiday Trips: Before a big trip, it’s a wise decision to book your car in for a pre-trip inspection to eliminate the possibility of faulty parts and accessories, which is the last thing you want if you’re on holiday!
  4. Servicing: Try to have your vehicle serviced regularly around every 6 months to ensure all vehicle parts are working as they should and to identify early detection of anything that could be classified as a safety hazard.
  5. Temperature: In summer, keep an eye on the temperature gage. If it increases or decreases suddenly, it is a sign of a problem with your cooling system and if this occurs, pull over and check immediately.

Auto Pit Stop is open Monday to Friday from 7:30am – 5:00pm and are closed on weekends. Phone (08) 9964 4842.

They’re located at 97 Pass Street (near the PCYC)

Video Security for your home or shop supplied and installed locally

If you're looking for a high quality CCTV (closed circuit television) system for your home or shop, but don't know where to start, Watson Computers might be able to help you out.

We had a chat with them about the cameras they provide and what's involved in getting one or more installed.

The model they recommended to us was called a UniFi

The recording quality was pretty amazing, a lot higher than most of the CCTV footage we usually see. Here's a video sample of the 720p camera model working.

And it works amazing at night time too.

The cameras used in these videos are $230 each to purchase.

There's also a 1080p model available (even better resolution) and they're $810 each. If you can afford them they're great, but you probably don't need them everywhere. Some store owners will just point one of them at the entrance to the store to ID people, and use the cheaper cameras to keep an eye on key areas of the premises.

There's no extra cost for the software needed to run these cameras.

They are available in stock.

The reason the cameras work so well at night is they have infrared collars around them. You can also purchase Infrared Lamps which flood the area with even more infrared light, invisible to the human eye but it lights up the camera like daylight.

What will it cost to install?

Watson Computers will give you a free quote to install a system. Each case is going to be different.

What else will you need?

The footage needs something to record on to. They can record to your existing computer, or a dedicated hard drive or small computer.

It will also need power. You can set it up so it draws power from the network cable, and Watson Computers can help you with that.

You may want to provide back up power, or Western Power ask that if you lock your meter box it be with an approved Western Power masterkey lock – available from licensed locksmiths and security suppliers. Western Power meter readers will have a master key, and it stops would be thieves turning off your power.

There's lots of systems online one can purchase, but if you want some expertise in recommending the right cameras and equipment for the job, and peace of mind knowing you have somewhere you can go if there's any dramas, using a local retailer like Watson Computers is a good idea.

Watson Computers are open 8:30-5:30 Mon to Fri and 9:00-1:00 on Saturday. Phone 08 9964 1543

They're located at 62 Flores Rd (near Place Rd). For more info click here.
