Mount Tarcoola Primary School is located in a quiet suburb about 5km from the central business district of Geraldton. The school was established in 1978 to cater for students living in the southern suburbs of Geraldton and the Greenough hinterland. A feature of the school is its attractive grounds and quiet location. Mount Tarcoola PS has a reputation as being a warm, friendly and welcoming school where manners, behaviour and dress standards are regarded as important.
The school caters for approximately 670 students from Kindergarten through to Year 7. The teaching staff are generally very experienced with the large majority having taught for ten years or more. Many of the teachers have Senior Teacher and/or Level 3 Classroom Teacher status. Teachers regard the school as a highly desirable location.
The school has achieved considerable success in a range of academic pursuits, most notably the statewide Numero Competition in Mathematics, the Maths Olympiad, Randolph Stow Young Writer's Award and Clem Burns Award.
A major focus of the school has been promoting cultural awareness, harmony and the participation of the various cultural groups in the school. The school has received several prestigious awards for its efforts in this area. A highlight of the school year is the celebration of Harmony and NAIDOC Day at the school.
Mount Tarcoola Primary School actively promotes and encourages parent participation and involvement in the life of the school. The Parents and Citizens' Association provides outstanding support. The school also has a highly active Early Childhood Committee that works closely with the early childhood classes at the school. Many hundreds of parents and extended family members join the school on numerous occasions throughout the year. These include regular school assemblies, Sports Carnival, Open Day and the End of Year Assembly and Graduation evening.
Mount Tarcoola Primary School is a Level 5 Primary School. In 2012 the school maintained 19 primary classes and 7 early childhood units. A number of composite classes are formed each year.
